   Antonine Wall

   A turf rampart on stone foundations thrown across Scotland's narrow waist in AD 142, sixty-three kilometres from the Clyde to the Forth, and the northwest frontier of the Roman empire for about twenty years before it was abandoned. It became World Heritage in 2008.

   Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum

   A red sandstone gallery of 1901 built for an international exhibition and the most visited free museum in Britain outside London. Dalí's Christ of St John of the Cross hangs here, a Spitfire hangs from the ceiling, and the organ is played daily at one o'clock.

   Glasgow School of Art

   Charles Rennie Mackintosh's building of 1909, and the work on which his reputation rests. Fire gutted it in 2014 during restoration and again, more completely, in 2018; what to do with the shell remains an open and painful question in Glasgow.

   HMS Repulse

   A battlecruiser built on the Clyde and completed in 1916. Japanese torpedo bombers sank her and the Prince of Wales off Malaya on 10 December 1941, which demonstrated in one afternoon that capital ships without air cover were finished.

   Glasgow Cathedral

   Begun in 1197 over the tomb of St Mungo, and the only medieval cathedral on the Scottish mainland to come through the Reformation with its fabric complete — the trade guilds guarded it. The crypt around the saint's grave is the finest Gothic interior in Scotland.

   Riverside Museum

   Zaha Hadid's transport museum of 2011 on the Clyde, a zigzag roof over a hall of locomotives, trams and a reconstructed 1930s street. The tall ship Glenlee, built here in 1896, is moored outside and is included free.

   St Andrew's Cathedral

   The Catholic cathedral of Glasgow, built in 1816 on the Clyde for Irish immigrants at a time when Catholic worship had only just become legal again in Scotland. Its front faces the river and its courtyard garden was added in 2011.

   St Mary's Cathedral

   The Episcopal cathedral in the West End, opened in 1871 and finished with its spire in 1893 — the tallest in the city. It appointed the first woman to be a cathedral provost in the United Kingdom.

   Gallery of Modern Art

   The modern art gallery, in a merchant's mansion of 1778 built with tobacco money. The Duke of Wellington statue outside has worn a traffic cone on his head almost continuously since the 1980s; the council once costed removing it and gave up.

    George Square

    The civic square, laid out from 1781 and now crowded with statues, Walter Scott on the column rather than anyone royal. In January 1919 a strike rally here ended with the Riot Act read and tanks sent to the city, which Glasgow has not forgotten.

   Paisley Abbey

   An abbey founded in 1163 and the burial place of the Stewarts — Marjorie Bruce, whose son became the first Stewart king, is entombed here after being thrown from a horse. The nave survives medieval and the choir was rebuilt in the twentieth century.

   Burrell Collection

   Nine thousand objects given to Glasgow in 1944 by a shipping magnate who bought Chinese bronzes, medieval tapestries and Degas with equal appetite. His conditions — the collection had to be housed away from city smoke — took forty years to satisfy; the building reopened in 2022 after a full refit.

   Cathkin Park

   A municipal park in Glasgow on the site of the second Hampden Park. It was the home ground of Queen's Park from 1884 to 1903 and of Third Lanark from 1903 to 1967; the terracing is still visible under the grass and football is still played on it.

   Bothwell Castle

   A thirteenth-century castle above a bend of the Clyde, whose circular donjon is the largest and finest of its kind in Scotland. It changed hands repeatedly in the Wars of Independence and was partly demolished by its own defenders to deny it to the English.

   Pollok House

   A country house in Pollok Country Park in Glasgow, seat of the Stirling Maxwell family. It holds a notable collection of Spanish painting, and the Burrell Collection stands in the same park.

   Glasgow Tower

   A 127-metre observation tower in the Glasgow Science Centre complex on the south bank of the Clyde. Guinness records it as the tallest structure in the world capable of rotating a full 360 degrees on its own axis, and since its completion in 2001 it has been the tallest building in Scotland.

   Kelvingrove Park

   A park of 1852 on the Kelvin, among the first in Britain laid out specifically for public recreation rather than converted from private ground. Three international exhibitions were held in it, which paid for the art gallery at its edge.

   Glasgow Science Centre

   A science centre opened in 2001 on the south bank, with a planetarium and an IMAX. The Glasgow Tower beside it, at a hundred and twenty-seven metres, is the tallest freestanding structure in the world capable of rotating through three hundred and sixty degrees.

   Buchanan Street

   Shopping street in Glasgow, pedestrianised in 1978 and paved in granite. Its buildings run from the Argyll Arcade of 1827 to the glass-roofed Buchanan Galleries.

    Hamilton Mausoleum

    A mausoleum at Hamilton in South Lanarkshire, built for the Dukes of Hamilton and a Category A listed building. Its echo is among the longest of any building in the world, which made it useless for the funerals it was designed for.
