Hurghada was a fishing village until the Red Sea turned out to have some of the clearest water and healthiest reef in the world; European charter flights have been landing since the 1980s.

Visibility often runs past thirty metres, and the wrecks off this coast are among the most dived anywhere. Boats go out to Giftun for snorkelling, quad bikes into the desert, and Luxor is a long day trip inland.

    Hurghada Grand Aquarium

    An aquarium in the Magawish district, opened in January 2015 with close to 3,500 cubic metres of tank water. Its walk-through tunnel shows the reef fish of the Red Sea, with desert and rainforest sections alongside.

    Hurghada Museum

    The first national museum on the Red Sea coast, opened in 2020 with some five hundred pieces drawn from across Egypt — Pharaonic, Coptic, Islamic and modern — arranged by theme rather than by period.

    Al-Mina Mosque

    The largest mosque in Hurghada, on the corniche beside the old harbour, with two minarets and a broad white dome. Its arcaded front faces the sea, and it fills past the doors for Friday prayers.
