Kerry holds Ireland's highest ground — Carrauntoohil at 1,038 metres in the Macgillycuddy's Reeks — and its heaviest rainfall, which is why everything here is so green. The Ring of Kerry runs a hundred and seventy-nine kilometres around the Iveragh peninsula and is best driven anticlockwise, against the coaches.

Killarney's national park holds lakes, a Victorian house and red deer. Skellig Michael, a monastery on a rock eleven kilometres offshore, is World Heritage and reachable only in calm weather.

Killarney National Park

A Tudor Revival mansion of 1843 on the peninsula between two of the Killarney lakes, done up at ruinous expense for a visit by Queen Victoria in 1861 — the spending is often blamed for the family's later sale of the estate. The rooms are shown furnished, and jaunting cars wait at the gate.
