Sharm el-Sheikh sits at the tip of Sinai where the Gulfs of Suez and Aqaba meet, and the reef at Ras Muhammad — Egypt's first national park — drops off a wall into deep blue.

Divers have come since the 1980s and the wrecks and coral gardens justify it. Inland, Mount Sinai is climbed overnight for the sunrise, with St Catherine's monastery at its foot, and the Coloured Canyon cuts through the desert nearby.

    Sharm el-Sheikh

    A town at the southern tip of Sinai that was a fishing village until Israel developed it after 1967 and Egypt expanded it after 1982. It now runs on diving and package flights, and hosted the COP27 climate conference in 2022.

    Egypt's first national park, declared in 1983 where the Gulfs of Suez and Aqaba meet. Its reefs drop into open water and draw fish in numbers found nowhere else on this coast; mangroves grow at the shoreline.
