   Kukeldash Madrasah

   A madrasa of about 1570, built by a Shaybanid vizier on the rise above Chorsu Bazaar and the largest surviving in Tashkent. It served in turn as a college, a caravanserai and a fortress, and its brick courtyard is still ringed by student cells.

   Amir Timur Museum

   A museum of the Timurid dynasty under a ribbed blue dome, opened in 1996 for the six hundred and sixtieth anniversary of Timur's birth. It sets out the empire that ran from Anatolia to Delhi, and the equestrian statue on the square outside belongs with it.

   The largest art museum in Tashkent, holding Uzbek applied art, Russian painting and a body of early Soviet avant-garde work that was sent to the provinces and so escaped destruction.

   State Museum of History of Uzbekistan

   Founded in 1876 as the museum of Russian Turkestan and now the state history museum, strongest on the Buddhist centuries — Kushan-era sculpture from Fayaz-Tepe in the south, before Islam reached the region. Worth an hour before going on to Samarkand.

   Sacred Heart Cathedral

   A Catholic cathedral known as the Polish church, begun in 1912 by a priest serving exiles and prisoners, left unfinished under Soviet rule and completed only in the 1990s. Its spires and stained glass are unlike anything else in the city.

   Holy Assumption Cathedral Church

   The pale blue Russian Orthodox cathedral of Tashkent, the seat of the diocese since 1945 and one of the few churches that kept working through the Soviet decades. It stands a short way from the city's Friday mosque.

   Dzhuma Mosque

   A mosque of 1451 built by the Sufi sheikh Ubaydullah Khoja Ahror, on the high ground above Chorsu, and long the Friday mosque of the city. The present building is a large late reconstruction on the old plan, with three domes over the prayer hall.

   Mausoleum of Sheikh Zaynudin

   A Timurid mausoleum over the grave of Zaynudin Bobo, a writer of the Suhrawardiyya Sufi order, with a domed underground cell beside it where he is said to have meditated for forty days at a time. It stands in an old quarter well outside the centre.

   Barakhan Madrasah

   The Barakhan Madrasah is a 16th-century religious college on Hazrati Imam Square, beside the library that holds the Uthman Quran, said to be the oldest in the world. It stands at the heart of Tashkent's Islamic quarter.

    Zangiata Mausoleum

    A complex around the tomb of a fourteenth-century Sufi sheikh, built at Timur's order and added to for five centuries — gatehouse, madrasa, mosque, minaret and pool. It lies on the southern edge of Tashkent and is still a place of pilgrimage.

   Palace of Grand Duke Nikolai Konstantinovich Romanov, Tashkent

   A brick palace of 1891 built for Grand Duke Nikolai Konstantinovich Romanov, who was exiled to Tashkent after stealing diamonds from his mother's icon to pay for an American mistress. He stayed, built canals and irrigation works, and died here in 1918.

   Amir Timur Square

   The central square of Tashkent, whose monument has changed with each regime — a Russian governor, then Marx, and since 1993 Timur on horseback. The Soviet modernist facade of the Hotel Uzbekistan closes one side.

   Tashkent City

   A district of towers and fountain parks built from 2018 on ground cleared of older mahalla housing, and intended as the city's business centre. It is lit at night and is where Tashkent shows itself off.

   State museum of applied arts of Uzbekistan

   A museum of Uzbek craft in a merchant's house of the 1880s whose rooms were decorated by the best plasterers and carvers of the time. Suzani embroidery, ceramics and carved doors are shown in the setting they were made for.

   Qaffol Shoshiy Mausoleum

   The tomb of a tenth-century imam, poet and locksmith who is counted among the city's patron saints, rebuilt in its present form in 1542. It stands at the centre of the Hazrati Imam complex, Tashkent's religious heart.

   Ok Saroy Presidential Palace

   The White Palace, the official workplace of Uzbekistan's first president from 1991 until his death in 2016, and opened afterwards as a museum. Its rooms are kept as he used them.

   A museum on the edge of Tashkent recording Soviet political repression in Uzbekistan, in particular the purges of the 1930s that killed most of the country's writers and scholars. It stands near a memorial to the executed.

    A complex around the tomb of a fourteenth-century sheikh, among the oldest surviving buildings in Tashkent and one of the few to come through the earthquake of 1966. A cemetery and madrasa stand with it.
