   Tampere Cathedral

   A National Romantic granite church of 1907 by Lars Sonck, and the seat of the Tampere diocese. Hugo Simberg's frescoes inside — a garland of naked boys, and a winged serpent over the chancel arch — caused a public scandal when they were unveiled.

   Moomin Museum

   The only museum in the world devoted to the Moomins, holding about two thousand of Tove Jansson's original drawings and the five-storey Moominhouse built by her collaborators. It moved into the Tampere Hall basement in 2017; photography inside is not allowed.

   Särkänniemi

   An amusement park on a headland in Tampere with an aquarium, a planetarium, a farm, an art museum and the Näsinneula tower, and the second most visited park in Finland after Linnanmäki. Its dolphinarium closed in 2016 and the animals went to Greece.

   Näsinneula tower

   A 168-metre observation tower of 1971 above Lake Näsijärvi, designed by Pekka Ilveskoski, and the tallest free-standing structure in Finland. The revolving restaurant near the top turns once every forty-five minutes.

   Kaleva Church

   A Lutheran church of 1966 in Liisankallio by Reima and Raili Pietilä, built as a ring of curved concrete fins so that the plan resembles a fish. It holds about 1,120 people and is known locally as the silo of souls.

   Tampere Lenin Museum

   A museum opened in Tampere in 1946 in the hall where Lenin and Stalin first met in 1905 — the only museum devoted to Lenin outside the Soviet Union. It closed in 2024 and reopened as a museum of Finland's relations with its eastern neighbour.

   Tampere Orthodox Church

   An Orthodox church of 1899 in the Kyttälä district, dedicated to Alexander Nevsky and Nicholas, designed by the Russian military architect T. U. Jazykov. Its seven onion domes were built for the Russian garrison and it is now the city's Orthodox parish church.

   Aleksanteri Church

   A brick church of 1881 on the edge of Hämeenpuisto park, designed by Theodor Decker, and part of the cathedral parish. Its neo-Gothic tower was the tallest thing in Tampere for a generation.

   Hervanta

   A satellite district ten kilometres south of the centre, built from 1973 on 13.8 square kilometres and home to about 26,000 people. Its prefabricated concrete blocks made it a byword for 1970s Finnish planning; the technical university is also here.

    Spy Museum

    The first public museum of espionage in the world, opened in 1998 by Teppo Turja, with concealed cameras, bugs and forged documents from both sides of the Cold War. Visitors can take a lie-detector test, which most fail.

   The Finnish Museum of Games

   A museum of Finnish games in the Vapriikki centre, opened in January 2017 and covering board games, pinball and the industry that produced Angry Birds and Max Payne. Over a hundred thousand people came in its first six months, and most of the machines are playable.

   Pispala

   A district 2.5 kilometres from the centre on the north slope of Pispalanharju, the highest esker in Finland, with wooden houses stacked up the ridge between two lakes. It was a working-class area outside the city limits until 1937 and is now the most expensive address in Tampere.

   Pyynikki observation tower

   A 26-metre stone observation tower of 1929 in the Pyynikki nature reserve, on the esker among the oldest pine forest in the city. The café at its base has sold the same doughnuts since 1929 and there is usually a queue.

   Museum Centre Vapriikki

   A cluster of museums in the old Tampella engineering works, whose name comes from the Swedish for factory. Nine exhibitions share the building, including the games museum, the mineral museum and Finland's only ice hockey museum.

   Tampere Market Hall

   A market hall of 1901 on Hämeenkatu, the largest in the Nordic countries, with about forty stalls under an arched iron roof. Black sausage with lingonberry jam is the Tampere item to eat here.

   Holy Cross Church, Tampere

   The Catholic church of Tampere, whose parish was founded on 3 September 1957, holding Mass in Finnish, Polish and English for a congregation drawn from many nationalities. Catholics are a small minority in Finland, about fifteen thousand in all.

   Rupriikki Media Museum

   A museum of mass communication in the Vapriikki centre, covering the press, telephone, radio, television and computing. Finland's first television broadcast equipment and a working telephone exchange are among the exhibits.

   Tampere Central Square

   The central square of Tampere on Hämeenkatu, between the old town hall and the theatre, and the point every tram and bus line passes. Christmas and May Day gatherings are held on it, and the Tammerkoski rapids run just to the east.

   Tornado

   A steel roller coaster at Särkänniemi, opened in 1997, running out over the shore of Lake Näsijärvi. It is the most intense ride in the park and its layout uses the drop of the headland rather than a tall lift hill.

    Hatanpää Arboretum

    An arboretum and botanical garden at Hatanpää on the grounds of a former manor, laid out in the 1970s beside Lake Pyhäjärvi. Its rose garden holds several hundred varieties and the labelled trees make it a teaching collection.
