   Lindholm Høje

   Some seven hundred Iron Age and Viking graves on a hill above the town, many outlined in standing stones set as the shape of a ship. Drifting sand buried the whole site and preserved it, including a field with the plough marks still in it.

   Budolfi Church

   The Lutheran cathedral of Aalborg, a fourteenth-century church with a baroque spire added in 1779. It is named for St Botolph, the English patron of travellers, which tells you what this port town was thinking about. The carillon plays over the pedestrian street below.

   Kunsten Museum of Modern Art Aalborg

   A museum of modern art on Kong Christians Allé in Aalborg. The Finnish architects Elissa and Alvar Aalto designed it with the Dane Jean-Jacques Baruël, and it was built between 1968 and 1972.

   Troldkirken

   A Stone Age long barrow near Nibe, its chamber built of massive glacial boulders around 3500 BC on a low mound above the Limfjord. The name means troll church, from the old belief that the underground folk held their services there.

   Utzon Center

   A cultural centre on the harbour at Aalborg. It was the last building Jørn Utzon, who designed the Sydney Opera House, left in his home town, and it opened the year before he died.

   Aalborg Søfarts- og Marinemuseum

   A maritime museum on the Aalborg waterfront, opened by Queen Margrethe II on 24 May 1992. A submarine and a torpedo boat sit hauled out on the quay, and the collection traces the development of ship radios and navigation instruments.

   John F. Kennedys Plads

   A pedestrian square of granite and concrete tiles beside the railway station, named for the American president after his death. An equestrian statue of Christian IX stands at its centre, with the bus terminal and the Kennedy Arcade opening off it.
