   Aarhus Cathedral

   The longest and tallest church in Denmark, ninety-three metres long and ninety-six high. Frescoes were found under the Reformation limewash and uncovered in the 1920s, and a model ship hangs in the nave, as it does in every Danish church within reach of the sea.

   ARoS Aarhus Kunstmuseum

   Founded in 1859 and the oldest public art museum in Denmark outside Copenhagen. Olafur Eliasson's Your Rainbow Panorama, a circular glass walkway a hundred and fifty metres round running through every colour of the spectrum, has sat on the roof since 2011.

   The Old Town

   An open-air town museum in the botanical garden at Aarhus. It opened in 1914 as the first open-air museum anywhere to deal with urban rather than rural life, and draws more than four hundred thousand visitors a year.

   Moesgaard Museum

   An archaeology and ethnography museum in a Henning Larsen building of 2014 whose grass roof is a hillside you can walk up and lie on. Inside is Grauballe Man, a bog body of about 290 BC with his skin, hair and fingerprints intact.

   Mols Bjerge National Park

   A Danish national park in central Jutland, opened on 29 August 2009 and covering 180 square kilometres. The Mols hills at its centre reach 137 metres and occupy 2,500 hectares.

   Church of Our Lady

   One of the largest churches in Aarhus, not far from the cathedral in the middle of the city. It was built in stages through the Middle Ages, from the late 1200s to 1500; of the original church completed in 1060 only the stone crypt survives.

   Danish Runic Inscription 66

   A runestone found at Aarhus. It was raised in the Viking age and its inscription commemorates a man who sailed ships, which testifies to the town's connection with the sea in that period.

   Aarhus Botanical Gardens

   A botanical garden in Aarhus, laid out in 1873. It adjoins the open-air folk museum, so stepping out of the glasshouses puts you straight into a street of old Danish houses.

    Gellerup

    A neighbourhood of the Brabrand district, known above all for the Gellerup Plan of the 1960s and 70s, one of the largest housing estates in Denmark and home to residents from scores of countries. A long programme of demolition and rebuilding has been reshaping it since the 2010s.

   A new district made by reworking the harbour of Aarhus. The container terminal was moved and housing and cultural buildings put in its place, which has brought the city centre back into contact with the sea.

   Viking Museum

   A Viking museum in a basement in central Aarhus. Tenth-century ramparts and house floors uncovered during work on a bank were left where they were found, and are shown in situ over the excavated layers.

   Catholic Church of Our Lady

   Built between 1877 and 1880 to a design by the German architect Franz Schmitz, on the pedestrian street Ryesgade near the central station. With some 3,500 members from 89 countries it is the largest Catholic congregation in Denmark, though the church seats only 500.

   Museum Ovartaci

   An art museum in Aarhus. It holds the work of the painter Ovartaci, who spent most of his life in the psychiatric hospital, together with drawings by other patients, and treats outsider art as its subject.

   Den Permanente Badeanstalt

   A wooden sea bath below the Riis Skov woods north of the centre, with jetties, changing huts and a lifeguard station around a small enclosed beach. One of the two municipal bathing places in Aarhus, it opens to the public from late June to mid-August.

   Poskær Stenhus

   A megalithic tomb at Mols north of Aarhus. It was built in the Neolithic and takes the form of a dolmen under an enormous capstone, one of the largest in Denmark.

    St. Nicholas' Church

    A neo-Romanesque church on the western edge of the City Hall Park, completed in 1893 to designs by Emanuel Fleischer and Hjalmar Kjaer. Its 700 square metres seat about 300; it belongs today to the Catholic Church in Denmark and serves the city's Chaldean congregation.
