   Lake Tana

   Ethiopia's largest lake and the source of the Blue Nile, 84 km long and 66 km wide but nowhere deeper than 15 metres, lying at 1,788 metres in the northwestern highlands. Monasteries founded from the 14th century stand on its islands, and UNESCO made the region a biosphere reserve in 2015.

   Blue Nile Falls

   The falls the Amharic calls Tis Abay, the great smoke, where the Blue Nile drops some forty-five metres about thirty kilometres downstream of Lake Tana. A hydroelectric diversion completed in 2003 takes most of the water, so the full curtain now appears only in the rains.

   Bahir Dar Stadium

   A multi-purpose stadium at Bahir Dar with an athletics track, among the largest in Ethiopia, holding tens of thousands. It is the home ground of the local club and the venue for regional football in Amhara.

   Ura Kidane Mehret

   A round church on the Zege peninsula in Lake Tana, reached by boat from Bahir Dar, its inner drum painted from floor to ceiling with saints, devils and Ethiopian kings, layer on layer over centuries. The monastery around it also keeps crowns and illuminated gospels.
