   Bo-Kaap

   The old Malay quarter on the slope of Signal Hill, settled by people brought as slaves from Southeast Asia. The houses were painted in their present colours after residents were allowed to buy them; the country's oldest mosque, from 1794, is among them.

   Castle of Good Hope

   A pentagonal bastion fort built by the Dutch East India Company between 1666 and 1679, and the oldest surviving building in South Africa. It holds the military museum and the key ceremony, and once stood on the shoreline before the land was reclaimed.

   Table Mountain National Park

   A park proclaimed in 1998 covering the mountain chain from Signal Hill down the peninsula to Cape Point. It protects fynbos, which packs more plant species into the peninsula than the whole of Britain, and forms part of a World Heritage site.

   Constantia

   A suburb in the southern valleys and the oldest wine district in South Africa, planted from 1685. Its sweet Vin de Constance was shipped to European courts and was among the wines Napoleon asked for on St Helena.

   Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden

   Botanical garden on the eastern slope of Table Mountain, founded in 1913. It grows only plants native to South Africa, and a steel walkway of 2014 runs through the tree canopy.

   Bellville

   A large town in Cape Town's northern suburbs, grown from a railway stop of the 1860s into the commercial and administrative centre of that side of the city, with a university and shopping centres.

   Bloubergstrand

   A beach suburb fifteen kilometres north of the city across Table Bay, and the place the postcard view of Table Mountain is taken from. Steady wind makes it one of the best kitesurfing beaches in the world.

   Camps Bay

   A beach suburb on the Atlantic side, the sand backed by palms and a strip of restaurants, with the Twelve Apostles ridge standing directly behind. The water comes off the Benguela current and is cold enough to shorten a swim.

   Llandudno

   A residential beach suburb on the Atlantic coast with no shops and no street lights, by local rule. Granite boulders the size of rooms lie along the sand, and property here is among the most expensive in Africa.

    Sea Point

    A dense seaside suburb between Signal Hill and the Atlantic, whose promenade runs three kilometres and is used by the whole city. The rocks at its western end show a contact between granite and slate that Darwin examined in 1836.

   Langa

   The oldest of Cape Town's black townships, formally opened in 1927 under the Urban Areas Act of 1923 that forced Africans into segregated locations. Its name means 'sun' in Xhosa. Police shot marchers here on 21 March 1960, the day of the Sharpeville massacre; a memorial went up in 2010.

   Gugulethu

   A township established from 1958, the third in Cape Town after Langa and Nyanga, built to house people removed from the city under apartheid. Amy Biehl, the American student killed here in 1993, is remembered by a cross at the spot, and her killers were later reconciled with her parents.

   Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa

   A museum of contemporary African art opened in 2017 inside a disused grain silo, whose concrete tubes were cut away to leave a cathedral-like atrium. It holds the largest collection of art from Africa and its diaspora anywhere.

   Houses of Parliament

   The seat of South Africa's parliament, its oldest wing dating from 1884 and the National Assembly chamber from the 1980s. Fire gutted much of the complex in January 2022 and the buildings are under repair.

   Athlone

   A suburb on the Cape Flats east of the city, designated for coloured residents under apartheid removals. Its power station's cooling towers were a landmark on the N2 until they were brought down in 2010.

   Claremont

   A suburb of Cape Town's southern suburbs on the eastern flank of Table Mountain, where housing climbs the slope. Its railway station and large shopping centres make it the commercial hinge of that side of the city.

   Milnerton

   A seaside suburb eleven kilometres north on Table Bay, with a lagoon behind the beach and a wooden bridge across it. It is the standard place to photograph Table Mountain from the other side, with the whole city laid out under it.

   Rhodes Memorial

   A memorial on the slope of Devil's Peak in the form of a Greek temple, designed by Herbert Baker and finished in 1912 for Cecil Rhodes. The view from its steps is the reason most people climb to it; the monument itself is contested.

   Wynberg

   A southern suburb of Cape Town between Plumstead and Kenilworth, and the main transport interchange for the southern suburbs. Its Victorian village core survives around the Maynardville open-air theatre.

    Philippi

    A large area of the Cape Flats that is partly township and partly farmland. The horticultural area on its western side grows a substantial share of the fresh produce Cape Town eats, on sandy soil over an aquifer.
