   cathedral of St. Peter and Paul

   The cathedral on Petrov hill, whose silhouette of twin eighty-four-metre neo-Gothic spires, added in 1905, is the emblem of Brno. Its bells ring noon at eleven, a custom said to date from a 1645 trick that made the besieging Swedes give up and leave.

   Špilberk Castle

   A hilltop castle founded in the thirteenth century, converted by the Habsburgs into the harshest prison in the empire — the casemates held Italian and Polish nationalists and, in the 1940s, Gestapo prisoners. It is now the city museum, with the cells open.

   Museum of Romani Culture

   The only museum in the world devoted to Romani history and culture with its own collection, founded in 1991 by Romani activists themselves. It covers the Nazi genocide and the forced settlement policies of communist Czechoslovakia from the perspective of those subjected to them.

   Veveří Castle

   A ducal and royal castle twelve kilometres northwest of Brno on the Svratka, first recorded in 1213 and one of the largest castle complexes in the Czech lands. It was left to decay under communism and has been under restoration since 1999.

   Moravian Museum

   The second oldest and second largest museum in the Czech Republic, founded in 1817, holding several million objects across natural science, archaeology, music and ethnography. The Venus of Věstonice, a ceramic figurine of about 29,000 BC, belongs to it.

   St Thomas's Abbey in Brno

   An Augustinian abbey whose abbot, Gregor Mendel, grew and counted some 28,000 pea plants in the monastery garden between 1856 and 1863 and worked out the laws of inheritance. His work was ignored for thirty-five years; a museum in the abbey covers it.

   Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady

   A high Gothic convent church in Old Brno, built between 1323 and 1334 for Queen Elisabeth Richeza on the site of an older sanctuary, in brick with terracotta detail. The Black Madonna of Brno, a twelfth-century Byzantine icon, is its object of devotion.

   Church of St. James

   A late Gothic hall church on Jakubské náměstí, one of the largest and most complete Gothic churches in the country, with a spire of ninety-two metres. A small carved figure on the outside of the south side bares its backside towards the cathedral, which locals have enjoyed for five centuries.

   Moravian Gallery in Brno

   The second largest art museum in the Czech Republic, formed in 1961 from two older institutions and spread over five buildings. It has run the Brno Biennale of graphic design since 1963, and holds the Jurkovič House and a Josef Hoffmann museum.

    Church of St. Thomas

    Founded in the mid-14th century by John Henry of Luxembourg as part of an Augustinian monastery and consecrated in 1356 before Charles IV. The margrave and his son Jobst lie in the tomb in front of the high altar; the interior was recast in Baroque form but keeps a high Gothic Pieta.

   Capuchin Crypt in Brno

   A burial vault under the Capuchin friary in the old town, in use from the mid-seventeenth century, where the soil and ventilation mummified the bodies. About twenty-four friars and some benefactors lie exposed on brick biers, laid on the bare ground as the order's rule required.

   Lužánky

   A park of 22.3 hectares, the largest in Brno and the oldest municipal park in the Czech lands — opened to the public in 1786 as the Augarten, following the Viennese example. Its plane trees date from that laying-out.

   Zelný trh

   A square and working market in the old town whose name means cabbage market, trading vegetables since the thirteenth century on about 0.6 hectares. The Parnas fountain of 1695 stands in the middle, and a Baroque cellar system runs beneath it.

   Cairn of Peace

   A memorial of 1910-12 by Josef Fanta on the hill at Prace, to the dead of the battle of Austerlitz in December 1805, and the first peace memorial built in Europe. Bones gathered from the battlefield are in the ossuary beneath the chapel.

   Stránská skála

   A limestone hill in eastern Brno, a national nature monument, and the most important Middle Pleistocene palaeontological site in central Europe. It has produced early human stone tools alongside the bones of the animals of the interglacial.

   Brno Zoo

   A zoo at Bystrc opened in 1953 on a wooded hillside above the Brno reservoir, taking part in European breeding programmes for the Sumatran tiger and Przewalski's horse. Its polar bears have bred more successfully than at most European zoos.

   Basilica Virgin Mary Křtiny

   A pilgrimage church at Křtiny in South Moravia, one of the last works of Jan Blažej Santini-Aichel, built from 1728 on a plan of interlocking geometry with a dome fresco of the Virgin. It is among the most important pilgrimage sites in Moravia.

   Anthropos Pavilion

   A pavilion of the Moravian Museum devoted to the earliest human past, built around a life-size mammoth model made in 1928. Its Palaeolithic collections come from the Moravian sites — Dolní Věstonice, Předmostí — that produced the oldest known ceramic figures and portrait carvings.

   A Protestant church of 1863-67 in Brno by Heinrich von Ferstel, of unrendered red brick with a single spire, and known simply as the Red Church. It is used by the Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren.

    Rajhrad Benedictine Monastery

    A Benedictine abbey at Rajhrad founded in 1045 by Duke Břetislav I, the oldest men's monastery in the Czech lands and the first monastery recorded in Moravia. Its baroque church is by Santini-Aichel, and its library of some 65,000 volumes is now a museum of literature.
