   Berlin Wall

   A hundred and fifty-five kilometres of concrete and wire that enclosed West Berlin from August 1961 until November 1989. At least a hundred and forty people died trying to cross it. The stretch at Bernauer Strasse is preserved with the death strip behind it; the East Side Gallery is the longest surviving section.

   Brandenburg Gate

   A neoclassical gate of 1791 modelled on the entrance to the Athenian Acropolis. Napoleon carried its bronze quadriga off to Paris in 1806 and it came back in 1814; from 1961 to 1989 the gate stood inside the death strip, reachable from neither side.

   Pergamon Museum

   The museum built for archaeology on a scale no other holds — the Pergamon Altar, the Ishtar Gate of Babylon and the market gate of Miletus, all reassembled indoors as complete structures. It closed entirely in October 2023 for a rebuild expected to run into the 2030s.

   Fernsehturm Berlin

   Built between 1965 and 1969 by the East German state as both a broadcasting mast and a showpiece, it stands 368 metres over Alexanderplatz, the tallest structure in Germany. The sphere carries an observation deck and a revolving restaurant at 207 metres.

   Museum Island

   Five museums on the northern end of an island in the Spree, built between 1830 and 1930 as a deliberate acropolis of art and listed as World Heritage in 1999. All five were bombed and all five have been rebuilt, the last of them only recently.

   Berlin Zoological Garden

   Opened in 1844, the oldest zoo in Germany and the one with more species than any other in the world. Ninety-one animals out of some four thousand survived the war; the rebuilding from that point is part of why Berliners regard the place as theirs.

   Berlin Cathedral

   A Protestant cathedral of 1905 on the Lustgarten, built by Wilhelm II at a scale intended to answer St Peter's. The Hohenzollern crypt below holds around ninety burials of the dynasty, and the dome walk gives the best close view of Museum Island.

   Potsdamer Platz

   The busiest square in Europe before the war, with Europe's first traffic light on it, then a bombed wasteland cut in two by the Wall, then the largest building site on the continent in the 1990s. What stands now is corporate and much criticised, but it is at least a place again.

   Alexanderplatz

   The square East Germany rebuilt as its show centre, with the World Clock, the Fountain of Friendship among Peoples and the television tower of 1969 — three hundred and sixty-eight metres, still the tallest structure in Germany. Its revolving restaurant turns once every half hour.

    Führerbunker

    The bunker under the Reich Chancellery garden where Hitler spent his last months and killed himself on 30 April 1945. The Soviets blew up what they could, the site was backfilled, and it is now a car park with a single information board — a deliberate refusal to make anything of it.

   Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe

   Peter Eisenman's field of two thousand seven hundred and eleven concrete slabs, opened in 2005 on nineteen thousand square metres between the Brandenburg Gate and the old ministries. The ground undulates so that walking into it puts the stones above your head, and an information centre with the names is underneath.

   Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche

   A church of 1895 that was gutted by bombing in 1943 and whose broken west tower was kept, against the plans of the day, when Egon Eiermann built the blue glass block beside it in 1961. Berliners call the two the hollow tooth and the powder box.

   Soviet War Memorial

   A war memorial and military cemetery in Treptower Park holding seven thousand of the eighty thousand Soviet soldiers killed in the battle for Berlin in the spring of 1945. The Soviet architect Yakov Belopolsky designed it, and it opened on 8 May 1949, four years after the end of the war.

   Altes Museum

   Schinkel's museum of 1830, one of the first buildings anywhere put up specifically to show art to the public, with a rotunda modelled on the Pantheon. It holds Greek and Roman antiquities, including the Praying Boy.

   Neues Museum

   A museum of 1855 left as a burnt shell for sixty years and rebuilt by David Chipperfield between 2003 and 2009, who kept every scar and filled the gaps in plain new brick rather than imitating what was lost. The Egyptian collection and Nefertiti are inside.

   Charlottenburg Palace

   The largest surviving Hohenzollern palace, begun in 1699 for Sophie Charlotte and extended through the eighteenth century. The Porcelain Cabinet, lined floor to ceiling with several thousand pieces of Chinese and Japanese ware, is the room people remember.

   Alte Nationalgalerie

   A temple-fronted gallery of 1876 on Museum Island holding nineteenth-century art: Friedrich, Menzel, and Böcklin's Isle of the Dead. Its French impressionists were bought early and against official taste by Hugo von Tschudi, which cost him the directorship.

   Großer Tiergarten

   Two hundred and ten hectares in the middle of Berlin, the electors' hunting ground before it was opened to the public. Berliners cut it down for firewood in the winters after 1945 and planted potatoes on it; it was replanted from tree donations sent by cities across Germany.

   Bode Museum

   The sculpture and Byzantine collection at the tip of Museum Island, in a neo-baroque building of 1904. Thieves took a hundred-kilogram Canadian gold coin from its coin cabinet in 2017 and it has never been recovered, presumably having been melted.

    Gemäldegalerie Berlin

    One of the world's great collections of European painting from the 13th to the 18th century, first opened in 1830 and in this Kulturforum building since 1998. Durer, Van Eyck, Raphael, Caravaggio, Rembrandt and Vermeer all hang here.
