   Odori Park

   A strip of park 1.5 kilometres long and 65 metres wide cutting east to west through the centre of Sapporo, laid out in 1871 as a firebreak between the government and residential halves of the new city. The Snow Festival in February, the beer gardens in summer and the autumn food festival all happen along it.

   Sapporo TV Tower

   A 147-metre tower of 1957 at the east end of Odori Park, with an observation deck at ninety metres that looks straight down the length of the park. Its clock face and the view during the Snow Festival are what people come for.

   Okurayama Ski Jump Stadium

   The large hill venue of the 1972 Winter Olympics, in Miyanomori, with a lift to a viewing platform at the top of the inrun. Looking down the jump is the point, and the city and Ishikari Bay are laid out beyond it.

   Hokkaidō Jingū

   The shrine founded in 1869 to the guardian deities of Hokkaido's colonisation, moved to Maruyama in 1871 and set in old-growth forest. Its approach has about 1,400 cherry and plum trees which bloom together in early May, later than anywhere else in Japan.

   Sapporo Beer Museum

   A museum in a Meiji-era sugar refinery converted to a brewery in 1890, covering the industry that began with a German-trained Japanese brewer sent to make beer from Hokkaido barley. Tasting is paid; the mutton grill next door is the traditional follow-on.

   Sapporo Clock Tower

   An American-style balloon-frame building of 1878, put up as the drill hall of the agricultural college, with a Howard clock from Boston installed in 1881 that still runs on weights wound by hand. Visitors regularly say it is smaller than expected, which it is.

   Hokkaido Museum

   The prefectural museum, opened in 2015 in Nopporo forest park, covering Hokkaido from the Ice Age through Ainu history to Japanese settlement. It treats the colonisation of the island as a subject rather than an achievement, which makes it the right first stop.

   Historical Village of Hokkaido

   An open-air museum of 1983 in Nopporo forest park with about fifty Meiji and Taisho buildings moved here from around Hokkaido — a station, a newspaper office, a fishing shed, farmhouses. Horse-drawn sleighs run along the main street in winter.

   Susukino

   The largest entertainment district north of Tokyo, of about 3,500 bars and restaurants in a grid of neon south of Odori. The Ramen Yokocho alley here is where Sapporo miso ramen was popularised in the 1950s, and it does not close early.

    Moerenuma Park

    A park of 189 hectares built on a former rubbish dump to a masterplan Isamu Noguchi drew months before his death in 1988, and completed in 2005. A glass pyramid, a fountain, a play mountain and an artificial peak make the whole park one sculpture; bicycles are hired at the gate.

   Sapporo Maruyama Zoo

   A municipal zoo beside Maruyama Park, opened on 5 May 1951, whose polar bears and Hokkaido brown bears are more active in the snow than in summer — which is why winter is the better visit. It shares an approach with the Hokkaido Shrine.

   Sapporo Japan Temple

   The 151st temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, dedicated in 2016 and the third in Japan. Only members may enter, but the garden and the granite exterior are open to look at.

   Asahiyama Memorial Park

   A free hilltop park west of the centre, at 137 metres, laid out in 1970 for the city's centenary. The night view over Sapporo from its terrace is the one locals use when they want quiet rather than the observation towers.

   Maruyama Park

   A park of old-growth forest next to the Hokkaido Shrine, modelled on the Kyoto park of the same name, and the city's main cherry-blossom ground in early May. Squirrels and woodpeckers are common on the trails up Maruyama itself.

   Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art

   The prefectural museum of modern art, opened in 1977 near the centre, with a strong collection of art glass — Émile Gallé and the Art Nouveau makers — alongside painters connected to Hokkaido. Its central location makes it the standard bad-weather option.

   Hitsujigaoka Observation Hill

   A viewpoint in Toyohira-ku where a bronze of William Smith Clark stands with his arm out — the Boy, be ambitious statue — with sheep grazing below and the city beyond. Lavender in July and the snow view in winter are both worth the bus.

   Hokkaido University Museum

   The general museum of Hokkaido University, opened in 1999 in a 1929 faculty building on a campus known for its ginkgo avenue and poplar walk. Dinosaur fossils, the Nipponosaurus among them, and four hundred thousand academic specimens; admission is free.

   Sapporo Satoland

   An agricultural theme park in Higashi-ku opened in 1995, where visitors harvest vegetables in summer and make butter and ice cream. It serves as the second site of the Snow Festival, with snow slides and tube runs for children.

   Takino Suzuran Hillside National Government Park

   The only national government park in Hokkaido, in the hills south of Sapporo, with four waterfalls, large flower meadows in summer and a tube-sledding hill in winter. It is big enough to take a full day with children.

    Sapporo Art Park

    An open-air arts complex in Minami-ku with a sculpture garden of seventy-four works, craft studios and an outdoor concert stage. In winter the sculptures are visited on snowshoes, which is a programme found in few other art parks.
