   Kyushu National Museum

   The fourth national museum of Japan, at Dazaifu, built on the explicit view that Japanese culture took shape through exchange with the rest of Asia. An escalator tunnel connects it to Dazaifu Tenmangū, so the two make one visit.

   Fukuoka Tower

   A 234-metre observation tower in the seafront Momochi district, clad in eight thousand half-mirror panels that reflect the sea. From the deck Hakata Bay and the lights of the city are taken in at once.

   Dazaifu Tenmangū

   Built over the grave of Sugawara no Michizane, the scholar-statesman who died in exile here in 903 and was later deified as Tenjin, patron of learning. Students come in their thousands before examinations, and some 6,000 plum trees, his emblem, fill the grounds.

   Fukuoka Mosque

   The mosque of Fukuoka and the centre of the Muslim community of Kyushu. Near Hakozaki Shrine, it is one view of the multicultural side of the city.

   Shōfuku-ji Temple

   The temple held to be the first Zen temple in Japan, with a stone recording that tea culture entered the country through it. It is the centre of a walk through the temple lanes of old Hakata.

   Fukuoka Art Museum

   The municipal art museum beside Ōhori Park, hanging Dalí and Miró and other modern European work together with the art of Kyushu. With a walk in the park it makes a cultural half-day.

   Fukuoka Castle

   The site of the castle of the Kuroda family, now the cherry blossom ground of Maizuru Park. From the keep platform the whole of central Fukuoka opens out.

   Hakozaki Shrine

   One of Japan's three great Hachiman shrines, moved to this site in 923. Its tower gate carries a tablet reading 'the enemy nation surrenders', a reminder of the Mongol invasions of the 13th century, and the Tamaseseri and Hojoya festivals still fill the approach.

   Mizuki

   An earthwork rampart over a kilometre long, thrown up in 664 to shield the Dazaifu government seat after Yamato's defeat at the Baekgang river. Built in the Korean manner with a moat along its outer face, it has been protected as a national historic site since 1921.

    Fukuoka City Museum

    The city museum holds the gold seal inscribed King of Na of Wa, granted by the Han court. Seeing the national treasure from the textbooks in person is the reason to come, and it stands beside Momochi beach near Fukuoka Tower.

   Nanzo-in Temple

   A Shingon temple in the hills at Sasaguri, known for a bronze reclining Buddha 41 metres long, said to be the largest bronze statue of its kind anywhere. Cast in 1995, it stands at the first stop of the Sasaguri pilgrimage of 88 temples.

   Kushida Shrine

   The tutelary shrine of Hakata and the home of the Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival in July. A decorated float weighing a tonne stands in the grounds all year, so the scale of it can be seen out of season.

   Genkō Bōrui

   The remains of a thirteenth-century stone rampart built along Hakata Bay against the Mongol invasions. Restored sections survive at Imazu and Nishijin, so a walk along the shore runs through the history.

   Ōhori Park

   A lake park made from the moats of the old castle, whose finest feature is the path linking the islands in the middle of the water by bridges. A lakeside Starbucks and a Japanese garden mean the walk is taken alongside the daily life of Fukuoka.

   Sumiyoshi Shrine

   Sumiyoshi Shrine in Hakata is held to be the oldest of all the Sumiyoshi shrines in Japan. It stands close enough to the centre of Fukuoka to walk to with Canal City.

   Kamado Shrine

   A shrine on Mount Homan, venerated as a sacred peak since ancient times and dedicated to Tamayori-bime along with Emperor Ojin and Empress Jingu. Ranked an imperial shrine of the first class before 1945, it draws visitors today above all as a shrine for matchmaking.

   The site of the Sky Dream Ferris wheel, once among the largest in the world. It has been dismantled and survives as a memory of the Marinoa City district.

   Hakata Port Tower

   Hakata Port Tower, built in 1964, is a red steel tower standing over the harbour, with a free observation deck looking across the bay. It pairs with the harbour market at Bayside Place.

    Fukuoka Japan Temple

    The Fukuoka temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, an unusual piece of religious architecture in the Momochi district. It is a place to look at from the outside.
