   Protestant Great Church of Debrecen

   The largest Protestant church in Hungary, finished in 1821 in a plain neoclassical style with two towers. Kossuth read the declaration deposing the Habsburgs from its pulpit in April 1849, which is why Debrecen calls itself the Calvinist Rome and means it politically as well.

   Saint Anne Cathedral, Debrecen

   A baroque church built by the Piarists between 1721 and 1746, when Catholics were first allowed back into a city that had long been Calvinist. It became the cathedral of the Debrecen-Nyiregyhaza diocese when that see was created in 1993.

   Déri Museum

   A museum opened in 1930 around the collection of the silk manufacturer Frigyes Deri, with Egyptian and Far Eastern pieces alongside Hungarian folk art. Munkacsy's vast Christ trilogy hangs in a hall of its own upstairs.

   Orthodox synagogue, Debrecen

   The synagogue on Pasti Street, built in 1893 for the Orthodox community, one of two that served a congregation of thousands before the war. Restored in recent years, it stands as a memorial to the Jews of Debrecen deported in 1944.

   Small Reformed Church in Debrecen

   A Calvinist church of 1720 known to everyone as the truncated church, since the storm of 1907 carried off its onion dome and it was left flat-topped. It stands on the site of a medieval church at the edge of the old market.
