   Jökulsá á Dal

   A glacial river in northeast Iceland, once about a hundred and fifty kilometres long and the region's largest. The Kárahnjúkar hydroelectric scheme flooded twenty-five kilometres of it and cut its flow by more than half.

   Dyrfjöll

   A ridge of rhyolite peaks rising to 1,136 metres between Borgarfjordur Eystri and the Fljotsdalur valley, cut by a great notch that gives the range its name, the door mountains. Snow holds in the gap into summer, and marked trails cross the pass.

   Gerpir

   The easternmost point of Iceland, a headland of basalt cliffs falling some 600 metres to the sea north of Nordfjordur. A rough track climbs to it, and on a clear day the view runs the length of the eastern fjords.

   A river eighty-five kilometres long flowing through Vopnafjörður in northeastern Iceland. Its name means the river of the temple, and it carries a strong run of salmon.

   St. Thorlak Church

   A small Catholic church at Reydarfjordur named for Thorlak, the patron saint of Iceland, and served from the Capuchin house beside it. It is one of very few Catholic churches in the east of the country.
