   Exeter Cathedral

   The cathedral carries the longest uninterrupted Gothic vault in the world, close to a hundred metres of continuous stone ribs. The astronomical clock of the 1480s shows the sun going round the earth, and the door below it has a hole cut for the cat that kept the mice off the ropes.

   Isca Dumnoniorum

   The Roman legionary fortress established about AD 55 for the Second Augusta, and later the civitas capital of the Dumnonii. Its bath house lies under the cathedral green, excavated and then covered again; stretches of the city wall still stand around the centre.

   Powderham Castle

   A fortified manor of the fourteenth century, seat of the Courtenay family for six hundred years and still lived in by them. The music room and library were done in the 1790s by James Wyatt, and the deer park runs down to the Exe estuary.

   Rougemont Castle

   The Norman castle of Exeter, raised on a spur of red volcanic rock in 1068 after William the Conqueror took the city. Its gatehouse is among the earliest Norman stonework in England; the rest is wall, lawn and later courts.
