   Magnus Cathedral

   A roofless cathedral at Kirkjubour begun about 1300 and never finished — the Reformation and a shortage of money stopped it. The walls stand to full height on the shore, and the farmhouse beside it has been lived in by the same family for seventeen generations.

   Tórshavn Cathedral

   A church of 1788, the second oldest in the Faroe Islands. It stands at the northern end of the Tinganes peninsula in the old town of Tórshavn, with white walls under a slate roof.

   Listasavn Føroya

   The national gallery of the Faroe Islands in Tórshavn, showing Faroese art as a permanent display. Founded in 1989, it occupies two buildings of 1,600 square metres at the northern end of the town park near the Nordic House.

   Skansin

   A fort on the hill beside Tórshavn harbour, built by Magnus Heinason in 1580. He raised it to defend the town after nearly being caught himself in a pirate raid.

   Saint Olav's Church, Kirkjubøur

   A medieval church in the village of Kirkjubøur on Streymoy, built before 1200 and the oldest in the Faroe Islands. It was the seat of the Catholic bishops of the Faroes until the Reformation.

   St. Mary's Church, Tórshavn

   A Catholic parish at 4 Maríugøta in Tórshavn, belonging to the diocese of Copenhagen. Catholicism in the Faroes goes back to 999, but after the Reformation the last bishop was executed in 1538.

   Vesturkirkjan

   A modern church in Tórshavn, capital of the Faroe Islands. It belongs to the Church of the Faroe Islands and, at 40.9 metres, is the tallest building in the country.

   Sands kirkja

   A traditional wooden church on Sandoy in the Faroe Islands. Consecrated in 1839, it burned down in 1988 and was rebuilt exactly as it had been; beneath it lie the traces of five earlier churches, one on top of another.

    Fríðrikskirkjan

    A modern church at Nes on Eysturoy, in the Faroe Islands. It serves the parish founded at Nes in 1541, the oldest Protestant parish in the country, and was designed by the Faroese architect Høgni Wardum Larsen.
