   Castle Cornet

   An island castle guarding St Peter Port since 1206. It held out for Charles I for eight years after the rest of Guernsey went over to Parliament — the longest siege of the Civil War. A gun is fired from it at noon each day.

   Hauteville House

   The house where Victor Hugo spent his exile from 1856 to 1870, fitting out room after room with carved panelling and salvaged furniture and finishing Les Miserables in the glass lookout on the roof. His descendants gave it to the City of Paris in 1927, and it opens as a museum.

   Saumarez Park

   The largest public park on Guernsey, four kilometres from St Peter Port in the Catel parish, laid out around the old Saumarez manor. A rose garden, a duck pond and the island's folk museum in the farm buildings fill the grounds.

   A very small chapel at St Andrew on Guernsey. A monk built it by hand from 1914 out of broken china and shells, and it holds barely ten people.

   La Longue Rocque

   A prehistoric standing stone in southwestern Guernsey. At three and a half metres it is the tallest menhir on the island, raised in the Bronze Age.

   Les Fouaillages

   A burial mound on L'Ancresse Common, found under the gorse in 1976 and dated to about 4500 BC, which makes it one of the oldest built monuments in Europe. Its triangular cairn covers a sequence of chambers used and reworked over two thousand years.

   Le Creux ès Faïes

   A passage grave in St Pierre du Bois whose name means the fairies' hollow, built about 3000 BC and long said to be a door into the world of the little people. Capstones still roof a chamber some eight metres long.
