The Galápagos lie a thousand kilometres out in the Pacific and had no land predators, so nothing on them learned to run away. Marine iguanas, sea lions and giant tortoises simply ignore visitors.

Darwin spent five weeks here in 1835. Ninety-seven per cent of the land is national park and everything is done with a licensed guide, on a live-aboard cruise or on day boats from Santa Cruz. Penguins swim on the equator.

Rábida Island
A small Galápagos island of five square kilometres whose sand is red from the iron in its lava. Sea lions haul out on the beach and pelicans nest in the saltbush behind it; the British called it Jervis Island.
