   Tumebamba

   The Inca regional capital in the southern highlands, where Huayna Capac was born and which he built up as a second Cusco. It was destroyed in the civil war between his sons just before the Spanish arrived; the Pumapungo terraces and foundations are what survive.

    A church on the bank above the Tomebamba where, by tradition, the first mass in Cuenca was said in 1540. The complex now holds a museum and a bakery run by nuns, and its terrace looks out over the river.
