   Jersey Zoo

   The zoo Gerald Durrell founded in 1959 to breed species too rare to leave in the wild, funded by the books he wrote about collecting them. It keeps no elephants or big cats and never has; the gorillas, lemurs and Caribbean iguanas are the point.

   Elizabeth Castle

   A castle begun in the 1590s on a tidal island off St Helier, once gunpowder made Mont Orgueil obsolete, and named for Elizabeth I by Walter Raleigh when he was governor. At low tide you walk the causeway; at high tide an amphibious ferry runs.

   Mont Orgueil

   A castle on a rock above Gorey harbour, begun soon after 1204 when Jersey stayed loyal to the English crown and Normandy did not. It held out for the king until 1651 and now climbs in ramps and stairs through five centuries of added defences.

   La Hougue Bie

   A Neolithic passage grave of about 3500 BC under an earth mound, with a medieval pilgrimage chapel built on top of it — two religions stacked on one spot. A German command bunker in the grounds is now the island's occupation memorial.

   La Cotte de St Brelade

   A cliff cave on the south-west coast where Neanderthals sheltered on and off for a quarter of a million years, leaving thousands of stone tools and mammoth bone. Two teeth found here in 1910 were shown in 2020 to carry modern human traits as well.

   Fort Regent

   A fortress of 1806 on the hill above St Helier, thrown up against Napoleon and never attacked. Its granite ramparts were roofed over in 1971 to make a leisure centre, which has since closed; the site is being redeveloped.

   Grosnez Castle

   A fourteenth-century refuge castle on the north-west headland, built without a well or living quarters because it was only meant to shelter the parish during French raids. A single pointed archway and a stretch of curtain wall are left.

   Ville-ès-Nouaux

   A Neolithic and Bronze Age burial ground in St Helier, unusual for holding a gallery grave, a cist and the remains of a stone circle on one small site. It was found in 1869 when the land was quarried for building.

   Saint Thomas'

   The largest church on Jersey, finished in 1887 for the French-speaking Catholics who had settled here, with a tower of about sixty metres that is still the tallest thing in St Helier. The Gothic Revival interior was built with money raised in France.

    Le Pinacle

    A blade of rock jutting from the cliffs at Les Landes, with ritual and defensive traces at its foot from the Neolithic through to the Roman period. Excavation found a Gallo-Roman shrine; the walk out along the heath is exposed and worth it.

   Haut de la Garenne

   A granite building north of Gorey, opened in 1867 as an industrial school for poor children and later a children's home. It closed in 1986 and became the focus of an abuse inquiry in 2008; it is now an activity centre for school groups.

   Hohlgangsanlage 8

   A tunnel complex at St Lawrence dug by forced labourers from across occupied Europe, begun as an artillery store and converted to a casualty-clearing hospital that was never finished. It opens today as the Jersey War Tunnels, telling the occupation from both sides.

   Hohlgangsanlage Tunnels

   The German army bored more than a kilometre of tunnels into Jersey's hillsides from 1941, numbering them Ho1 upwards for stores, workshops and a hospital. Most are sealed; the labour was Spanish republicans, Russians and North Africans, and men died in them.

   Les Landes

   The largest surviving stretch of natural heath on Jersey, on the north-west plateau, a Site of Special Interest since 1996. Puffins and razorbills breed on the cliffs below, and the old racecourse still marks the turf.

   Battery Lothringen

   A coastal battery above St Brelade's Bay, named after a German battleship and built by the Organisation Todt with four naval guns covering the western approaches. Its command bunker is preserved with the range-finding equipment inside.

   Seymour Tower

   A square defence tower of 1782 on the tidal islet of L'Avarison, two kilometres offshore, reached on foot only at low water across a Ramsar-listed reef. Guided walks stay the night in it, and the tide cuts you off either way.

   St Matthew's Church

   The Glass Church at Millbrook, an ordinary Anglican building of 1840 whose entire interior — font, screens, cross, windows — was made in moulded glass by René Lalique in 1934. It was commissioned as a memorial by Florence Boot of the chemist family.

   St Brelade's Church

   One of the twelve ancient parish churches, standing at the western end of St Brelade's Bay with its graveyard almost on the sand. Parts of the granite fabric go back to the eleventh century, making it the oldest building in use on the island.

   The parish church of St Helier and one of the twelve ancient parish churches of Jersey, serving as the island's civic church and pro-cathedral. Parts of the fabric go back to the 11th century, and the states' and parish memorials fill its aisles.

    Fishermen's Chapel

    A twelfth-century chapel beside St Brelade's Church, the older of the two buildings and once the parish's only place of worship. Fifteenth-century frescoes of the Last Judgement survive on the plaster inside, uncovered in 1918.
