Ruka and Kuusamo sit in the forest near the Russian border, and work as an outdoor base in all four seasons — skiing from October to May, rafting and walking through the light summer.

The Bear's Ring through Oulanka national park runs eighty kilometres past rapids and swing bridges and is Finland's best-known trail. Reindeer farms take visitors, and the aurora shows on clear winter nights.

    A fell of 492 metres at Kuusamo in Finland and a ski resort. Beyond the downhill runs it has more than five hundred kilometres of cross-country track and six hundred of snowmobile route.

    The largest ski jumping hill in Finland, at Ruka north of Kuusamo. The opening rounds of the ski jumping and Nordic combined World Cup are regularly held here, on a K120 large hill with a K64 beside it.
