   A Gothic castle of the twelfth century on a rock inside a bend of the Ohře, the shape of the loop giving the town its name — loket means elbow. It served as a prison for a century and a half and is now a museum; Goethe stayed in the town below.

   A synagogue in Karlovy Vary, opened in 1877 and among the largest in Bohemia, burned down on Kristallnacht in 1938. A plaque marks where it stood.

   Andělská Hora Castle

   A castle on a rock above the village of Andělská Hora, seven kilometres southeast of Karlovy Vary. The name means the angels' mountain, and the Ryzmburk family built it in the late fourteenth or early fifteenth century to hold their estates.
