Larnaca is where most flights to Cyprus land, on a bay with a palm promenade and a salt lake behind it that fills with flamingos each winter.

The church of St Lazarus holds his second tomb, the island's claim being that he came here after Bethany. The Zenobia, a ferry that sank in 1980, lies offshore and is among the best wreck dives in the Mediterranean. Nicosia, still divided, is an hour away.

Kition
A Phoenician and Greek city-kingdom on the coast at modern Larnaca, one of the ten kingdoms of ancient Cyprus, occupied from the thirteenth century BC. Its temples, copper workshops and harbour have been excavated in the middle of the modern town; Zeno the Stoic was born here.

Hala Sultan Tekke
A mosque and tekke on the west shore of Larnaca Salt Lake, built around the tomb of Umm Haram, a relative of the Prophet by tradition, who died here in 649. It is among the most important Muslim sites on Cyprus and stands in a grove of palms and cypresses.

Church of Saint Lazarus, Larnaca
A church of the late ninth century over the tomb said to be that of Lazarus, who by Cypriot tradition came here after being raised and served thirty years as bishop. His empty sarcophagus is in the crypt; the wooden iconostasis is eighteenth-century baroque.

Larnaca Castle
A squat fort at the end of the seafront promenade, first raised in the Middle Ages to guard the harbour and rebuilt by the Ottomans in 1625. It later served as an artillery station and a prison, and now houses the district's medieval museum.

Stavrovouni Monastery
A Greek Orthodox monastery on a hilltop at 690 metres, founded by tradition in 327 by Saint Helena, who is said to have left a fragment of the True Cross here — one of very few places that claims to display one. Women are not admitted.

A Swedish-built roll-on roll-off ferry that capsized and sank off Larnaca in June 1980 on her maiden voyage, with no loss of life. She lies on her side in 42 metres of water with her cargo of lorries still aboard, and is rated among the best wreck dives in the world.

Larnaca Synagogue
A Hasidic synagogue at Apollodorou 4 in Larnaca, completed in 2005 in a modernist style, and the largest and oldest of the five synagogues in Cyprus. It serves a small resident community and a large seasonal one.

The district archaeological museum, opened in 1969, showing the development of Kition and the Larnaca region from the Neolithic to the Roman period. Material from the excavations a few streets away forms the core.

The Armenian Apostolic church of Larnaca, begun as a small chapel in 1909 by refugees from the Adana massacres and completed on 1 April 1913 after a fundraising campaign. It serves the community still.

A Byzantine church at Kiti, twelve kilometres southwest of Larnaca, whose apse holds a sixth-century mosaic of the Virgin between two archangels — one of the very few to survive the iconoclast destruction. It is on the UNESCO tentative list.
