   Ljubljana Castle

   The castle on the hill above the centre, rebuilt after the earthquake of 1511 and used variously as a barracks, a prison and a slum before restoration. A funicular runs up from the market, and the outlook tower gives the Alps on a clear day.

   Ljubljana Cathedral

   A baroque cathedral of 1706 with a frescoed dome added in 1841. Its bronze doors were made in 1996 for a papal visit: one shows the history of Slovene Christianity, the other the twentieth-century bishops, their faces cast from life.

   National Gallery of Slovenia

   The national gallery, holding Slovene art from the Gothic to the early twentieth century, and the original of the Robba fountain, brought indoors for protection. The Impressionists of the Sava school are the part worth the time.

   Emona

   The Roman colony founded in the first century AD where the navigable river came closest to Castle Hill, on the amber road between the Adriatic and the Danube. Its street grid, a house with mosaic floors and part of the wall are exposed in the city.

   Prešeren Square

   The central square, with the statue of France Prešeren, the national poet, and a muse above him — the nudity of which scandalised the church in 1905. Plečnik's Triple Bridge crosses the river from it in three parallel spans.

   National Museum of Slovenia

   The national museum, holding the Divje Babe flute — a pierced cave bear bone about sixty thousand years old, argued to be the oldest musical instrument in the world — and the Vače situla, a bronze bucket engraved with an Iron Age procession.

   Franciscan Church of the Annunciation

   A Franciscan church of the 1660s whose facade is painted the salmon pink that has become the city's signature colour. Robba carved the high altar; Plečnik laid the pavement in front of it and put the streetlamps where he wanted them.

   Ljubljana Zoo

   The national zoo of Slovenia, twenty hectares on the wooded slope below Rožnik hill, holding around five hundred animals. It works largely on European species and on the Karst cave fauna the country is known for.

   Arch. Plečnik's Marketplace

   Jože Plečnik's market colonnade of 1942, a long low arcade curving along the river with a fish market at one end and a covered bridge that was never finished as he intended. Produce is still sold in it every morning.

    Tivoli City Park

    The largest park in Ljubljana, running up onto the wooded hills, with a promenade laid out by Plečnik and lined with enlarged photographs — the oldest permanent open-air gallery of its kind. The path continues up Rožnik, which Ljubljana walks on Sundays.

   Congress Square

   A square laid out for the Congress of Laibach in 1821, when the powers of Europe met here to discuss suppressing revolutions. Plečnik remodelled it in the 1930s, and it holds the university and the Ursuline church.

   Path of Remembrance and Comradeship

   A gravel path thirty-three kilometres long that circles the city along the line of the barbed wire with which Italian occupation forces enclosed Ljubljana in 1942 to isolate the resistance. Markers stand where the bunkers were, and the city walks it each May.

   Prešeren Monument, Ljubljana

   A bronze statue of France Prešeren, the national poet of Slovenia. It stands on the eastern side of Prešeren Square in Ljubljana in front of the Central Pharmacy building, and is among the best-known monuments in the country.

   Ljubljana Mosque

   A mosque and Islamic centre opened in 2020 after fifty years of applications, refusals and referendums — Slovenia's Muslim community, some fifty thousand people, had no purpose-built mosque until then. The design is a white cube with a translucent dome.

   Robba Fountain

   A fountain of 1751 by Francesco Robba showing the three rivers of Carniola as marble figures, in front of the town hall. What stands in the square is a copy; the original was moved indoors to the national gallery to save it from the weather.

   Križanke

   A theatre in the courtyard of the former Crusader monastery at 1 French Revolution Square in Ljubljana. It serves as the stage of the summer festival; Jože Plečnik converted it.

   National Assembly Building

   The building of the Slovenian parliament on Republic Square in Ljubljana. The architect Vinko Glanz designed it and it was built between 1954 and 1959, a modernist building of three storeys covering 2,200 square metres.

   Republic Square, Ljubljana

   The largest square in Ljubljana, designed in the 1960s by Edvard Ravnikar between the parliament and the cultural centre, and originally called Revolution Square. Slovene independence was declared from it on 26 June 1991.
