   Naval cathedral of St. Nicholas

   The Russian Orthodox naval cathedral of Karosta, built between 1900 and 1903 for the Tsar's Baltic fleet and consecrated in the presence of Nicholas II. Put to use as a cinema and sports hall in the Soviet decades, it returned to worship after 1991.

   The oldest and largest quarter of Liepaja, lying between the trade canal and the sea. Holy Trinity cathedral stands here with an organ of 1779, once the largest in the world, along with the Rose Square and the beach park.

   Jaunliepāja

   The quarter across the trade canal from the old town, which grew from the 1870s as the railway reached Liepaja and the port expanded. Wooden houses and brick warehouses from that boom still line its streets.

    A large modern residential district at the southern end of Liepāja in Latvia, on the western shore of Lake Liepāja. Its present name was chosen from 108 entries in a competition in 1975.
