Paphos was the centre of the cult of Aphrodite, who was said to have come ashore at the rock stack down the coast, and the whole town is on the World Heritage list.

The archaeological park holds Roman villas with mosaic floors of Dionysus and Theseus, still in place. Rock-cut tombs from the fourth century BC stand near the sea, and the Akamas peninsula and its blue lagoon are north.

A fort at the west end of Paphos harbour, first Byzantine, rebuilt by the Lusignans in the thirteenth century, pulled down by Venice and raised again by the Ottomans in 1592. The British used it to store salt.

Tombs of the Kings
A necropolis two kilometres north of the harbour, cut into the rock from the fourth century BC. The tombs imitate houses, with peristyle courtyards and Doric columns carved from the living stone — a Ptolemaic Egyptian idea. No kings are buried in them, despite the name.

An archaeological park in the coastal new town of Paphos, containing most of the ancient Greek and Roman city. Remains run from prehistory to the medieval period and excavation continues; the mosaic floors of the Roman villas are its best-known part.

Saranta Kolones
The remains of a medieval fortress inside the Paphos archaeological park, north of the harbour. Granite columns apparently taken from the old agora were found here, which gives it the name of the castle of forty columns; it was built to defend Nea Paphos and its harbour against Arab raids at the end of the seventh century and reworked under the Lusignans.

Agia Paraskevi
Orthodox church in the centre of Yeroskipou, Cyprus. Its five domes make it a rare form — only one other church on the island, at Peristerona, is built the same way — and the plan descends from the Church of St John at Ephesus and the Church of the Holy Apostles in Constantinople.

Agios Neophytos Monastery
One of the best-known monasteries in Cyprus, at Tala fifteen kilometres north of Paphos. The monk Neophytos founded it in the twelfth century; the hermitage he cut out of the natural rock, and the monastery beside it, are open as a museum.

Chrysoroyiatissa Monastery
A monastery at 820 metres, forty kilometres northeast of Paphos in Cyprus. It is dedicated to Our Lady of the Golden Pomegranate, was founded by the monk Ignatios in the twelfth century, and lies a kilometre and a half from Panagia, the village where Archbishop Makarios was born.
