   Gračanica monastery

   A Serbian Orthodox monastery of 1321 built by King Milutin, whose five-domed church is a high point of late Byzantine architecture and is painted throughout. It is World Heritage, listed as in danger, and guarded — the political situation, not the building, is the reason.

   National Library of Kosovo

   A library of 1982 by Andrija Mutnjaković, ninety-nine domes of different sizes wrapped in a metal fishnet, and a fixture on international lists of ugly buildings. Its architect maintains it draws on Byzantine and Ottoman forms at once, which is defensible and does not help.

   Cathedral of Saint Mother Teresa in Pristina

   A Catholic cathedral consecrated in 2010 in a country that is around ninety per cent Muslim, named after Kosovo's most famous Albanian, who was born in Skopje. Its tower is open and gives the best view over Pristina.

   King's Mosque in Pristina

   A mosque built in 1461 for Mehmed the Conqueror, and the largest in Pristina. Austrian forces briefly converted it to a Jesuit church during their occupation of 1690, which is remembered locally as an insult on both sides.

   Ulpiana

   A Roman city southeast of Pristina, refounded by Justinian and named after him, whose walls, basilica and baths are being excavated. It was the administrative centre of the mining district that made this region matter to Rome.

   Newborn monument

   A typographic sculpture spelling NEWBORN, unveiled on 17 February 2008 as Kosovo declared independence. It is repainted every year on the anniversary with a new theme — flags of recognising states, barbed wire, the faces of the missing.

   National Museum of Kosovo

   The national museum, in an Austro-Hungarian building of 1889, whose emblem is the Goddess on the Throne — a terracotta figure some six thousand years old found in Pristina and now used as the city's symbol. Much of its collection was taken to Belgrade in 1998 and not returned.

   Gazimestan

   A memorial tower of 1953 on the plain where the Battle of Kosovo was fought in 1389, inscribed with a curse on anyone who does not fight for it. Milošević addressed a crowd of hundreds of thousands here in 1989, which is generally taken as the start of what followed.

   National Gallery of Kosovo

   The national gallery, founded in 1979, showing Kosovar art from the twentieth century onward along with contemporary exhibitions. It sits on the university campus and is free.

    Christ the Saviour Cathedral

    A Serbian Orthodox cathedral begun in 1992 on land taken from the university, and left unfinished when the war stopped work in 1999. The bare concrete shell still stands in the middle of the campus, and what should be done with it is unresolved.

   Bill Clinton Boulevard

   A boulevard renamed after Bill Clinton, with a three-metre statue of him unveiled in 2009, in gratitude for the NATO intervention of 1999. A shop nearby sells Hillary-branded clothing, which is not part of the monument but is part of the street.

   Tomb of Sultan Murat

   The mausoleum of Ottoman Sultan Murad I, who fell at the Battle of Kosovo in 1389. His son Bayezid I raised it in the 14th century, making it the first Ottoman building on Kosovo soil.

   Skanderbeg Square, Pristina

   Square in Pristina named after the Albanian leader Skanderbeg, whose equestrian statue of 2001 stands on it. The main boulevard runs from here past the government buildings.

   Bazaar Mosque in Pristina

   The oldest building in Pristina, begun in the late fourteenth century and finished under Murad II, and the point at which the old bazaar quarter starts. It is also called the stone mosque, for the material that distinguishes it from later brick ones.

   An ethnographic museum in Pristina in Kosovo, housed in the eighteenth-century Emin Gjiku complex, the residence of the Gjinolli family.

   Bear Sanctuary Prishtina

   A sanctuary for brown bears twenty-two kilometres from Pristina in Kosovo, near Lake Badovc. It takes in bears that had been kept in captivity by private owners.

   Harilaq Fortress

   A hilltop fortification west of Harilaq occupied from prehistory and rebuilt in late antiquity, when this region was fortified against invasion from the north. Its walls stand in open pasture with no facilities of any kind.

   Church of St. John the Baptist, Samodreža

   Church near Pristina, rebuilt in 1932 on medieval foundations. Serbian tradition holds that Prince Lazar's army took communion here before the battle of Kosovo in 1389.

   Prishtina Clock Tower

   A hexagonal clock tower of sandstone and brick, twenty-six metres high, built in the nineteenth century by the same governor as the mosque beside it. It told the town when to pray and when to shut up shop.

    Bregu i Diellit

    A large district of socialist-era apartment blocks on the hillside southwest of the centre — the name means sunny hill. Most of Pristina's population growth after 1960 went into estates like this one.
