Sibiu was a Saxon town, one of seven the Germans founded in Transylvania, and its roofs carry eyelid dormers that give the buildings a watchful look people photograph endlessly.

The Brukenthal, opened in 1817, is among the oldest museums in Europe. The Liars' Bridge is cast iron from 1859 and the subject of several stories. The Transfăgărășan, that road over the mountains, starts an hour north.

Holy Trinity Cathedral
The Orthodox cathedral of Sibiu at 35 Mitropoliei Street, built between 1902 and 1906 on the model of Hagia Sophia, and the seat of the metropolitan of Transylvania. Its interior is covered in Byzantine-style painting with gold ground.

Brukenthal National Museum
A museum in the town palace of Samuel von Brukenthal, governor of Transylvania, who assembled the collection from about 1790 and opened it to the public in 1817 — making it the oldest museum in present-day Romania. Its European painting gallery is the strongest in the country.

Sibiu Lutheran Cathedral
The best-known Gothic church in Sibiu, built from the fourteenth century with a spire of 73.34 metres. Four turrets on the tower signalled to travellers that the town held the right of capital punishment; Vlad the Impaler's son Mihnea is buried inside.

Jesuit Church
A Catholic church at 3 Piața Mare beside the Brukenthal palace, also called the Holy Trinity, and one of the principal baroque churches of Transylvania. It was built for the Jesuits in the 1720s as the Habsburgs reasserted Catholicism in the Saxon city.

The Greek Catholic Church Saints Peter and Paul, Sibiu
An Orthodox church at 17 Reconstrucției Street in Sibiu, known as the Church between the Fir Trees, dedicated to Peter and Paul. It was Greek Catholic until 1948, when the communist government abolished that church and transferred its buildings.

Annunciation Church, Sibiu

A theatre and concert hall in the Thick Tower of the old fortifications, where the first theatre in what is now Romania opened in 1788. Since 7 October 2004 it has been the home of the Sibiu State Philharmonic.
