Aktau is a Soviet planned city on the Caspian where the streets have numbers rather than names, and where the water plant once ran on a nuclear reactor.

It is the base for Mangystau, a desert of chalk canyons, salt flats and rock formations that look like nowhere else on earth. Bozzhyra's cliffs and the underground mosque at Shakpak Ata are the usual targets, by 4WD and with a guide.

    Jas Qanat Stadium

    A stadium in Aktau, home of FC Caspiy in the Kazakh premier league. It stands in a Soviet planned city where the streets are numbered rather than named, which makes the ground one of the few easily given landmarks.

    Koshkar-Ata

    A lake five kilometres north of Aktau, lying thirty-six metres below sea level. It was used for decades as the tailings pond of the city's uranium and chemical works, and the exposed sediment is a continuing contamination problem rather than a beauty spot.

    Mangyshlak experimental Botanical Garden

    A research botanical garden founded in 1972 at Aktau to test which trees and shrubs could be grown on the Mangyshlak desert peninsula. Its 39 hectares are counted among the protected natural areas of Kazakhstan.
