   Sayram

   An old oasis settlement east of Shymkent, known in the Middle Ages as Ispijab and one of the stops on the silk road. The Sufi teacher Ahmed Yasawi was born here, and the tombs of his parents are places of pilgrimage.

   Independence Park

   A park in the middle of Shymkent opened in October 2011 for the twentieth anniversary of independence, with an arch at the gate, a musical fountain and beds of imported flowers. It is where the city walks on summer evenings.

   Shymkent Zoo

   The oldest and largest zoo in Kazakhstan, on fifty-four hectares of which about thirty-four are open to visitors. Its collection leans to the animals of the southern steppe and the Tien Shan foothills.

   Mausoleum of Karashash-ana

   A domed tomb in the old town of Sayram over the grave of Karashash Ana, mother of the Sufi teacher Khoja Ahmed Yasawi. First raised in the 13th century, it has been rebuilt more than once; the present brick structure dates from the 19th.

   Ibragim Ata mausoleum

   A mausoleum in the Sayram quarter of Shymkent over the grave of Sheikh Ibrahim, father of the Sufi poet Khoja Ahmed Yasawi. It is listed among the architectural monuments of republican importance in Kazakhstan.
