   Valère Castle

   A fortified church on one of Sion's two hills, built in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Its organ, made about 1435, is the oldest playable organ in the world; a festival is held on it each summer and the case still carries its original painted shutters.

   Saint-Léonard underground lake

   An underground lake at Saint-Léonard outside Sion. At three hundred metres long it is among the largest subterranean lakes in Europe, and it is crossed by boat.

   The cathedral of the diocese of Sion. It is Byzantine in manner and holds a number of Roman inscriptions, fifteen altars and several fonts.

   Tourbillon Castle

   The ruins of the bishop's castle on the hill above Sion, facing the church of Valère on the hill opposite. Bishop Boniface de Challant had it built at the end of the thirteenth century.

   A village outside Sion in Switzerland. Its eleventh-century Romanesque church survives and is regarded as the leading example of the period in the Valais.

   A Catholic church outside Sion, dedicated to Saint Nicholas and standing in the middle of the village.

   Montorge castle ruin

   The broken tower of a 13th-century bishop's castle on a hill west of Sion, one of three strongholds that once guarded the town. Burnt in the wars between the bishops and Savoy, it has stood ruined since the 15th century; a vineyard path climbs to it.

    Granges

    A village on the Rhone plain below Sierre, a commune in its own right until the end of 1971, when it was merged into the town. Its Catholic parish keeps the old name, and vineyards climb the slope behind.

   Château de Muzot

   A medieval tower house at Sierre outside Sion. The poet Rainer Maria Rilke spent his last years in it, writing his French poems, and is buried in the churchyard of the village nearby.

   A church at the foot of the Valere hill dedicated to Theodul, first bishop of the Valais and patron of the canton. The present Gothic building went up early in the 16th century over earlier churches, and its bell tower is one of the marks of the old town.
