   A castle three kilometres southeast of Winterthur, overlooking the Töss. It is listed as a Swiss heritage site of national significance.

   former Benedictine monastery Muri

   A Benedictine abbey founded in 1027 at Muri in Aargau, dissolved in 1841 when the canton suppressed its monasteries. Its octagonal baroque church survives, and the hearts of the last Austro-Hungarian emperor and empress are interred in the Loreto chapel.

    Zürich Zoo

    Zoo in Zurich, opened in 1929 and known locally as the Zolli. Its Masoala hall of 2003 encloses a hectare of Madagascan rainforest under a translucent roof.

   Bellevue

   The square where the lake, the river and the main tram lines meet, laid out in the 1830s when the ramparts came down. Almost every tram in Zurich passes through it, and the Opera House and the lakeside promenade start from its edge.

   Chinese Garden

   A Chinese garden given by Kunming, Zurich's partner city, in thanks for Swiss help with its water supply, and opened in 1994. It is built to the classical scholar's-garden pattern, with the three friends of winter — pine, bamboo and plum — planted through it.

   MFO-Park

   Park in Zurich of 2002 on the site of a machine works, built as a steel frame planted with climbers rather than as open ground. Visitors walk up through it on galleries.

    Mahmood Mosque

    A building on Forchstrasse in Zurich, the first purpose-built mosque in Switzerland. The Ahmadiyya Muslim community owns and runs it, and it has a minaret of the kind whose construction was later banned by referendum.
