   Jvari

   A Georgian Orthodox church of the sixth century on a hill 656 metres above the meeting of the Aragvi and the Kura, looking down on Mtskheta. Almost unaltered since it was built, it gave its name to a whole type of Caucasian church plan; UNESCO listed it in 1994.

   Holy Trinity Cathedral of Tbilisi

   The main cathedral of the Georgian church, built between 1995 and 2004 on a hill above the city and one of the tallest Orthodox churches in the world at over eighty metres. Its site, formerly an Armenian cemetery, was and remains contested.

   Svetitskhoveli Cathedral

   The cathedral at Mtskheta, eleventh century in its present form and the burial church of Georgian kings. Tradition holds that the robe of Christ is buried under it, brought back by a Jewish Georgian who was at the crucifixion, and it is World Heritage.

   Kartlis Deda

   A twenty-metre aluminium figure raised on Sololaki hill in 1958 for the city's fifteen hundredth anniversary. She holds a bowl of wine in one hand for those who come as friends and a sword in the other for those who do not, which Georgians consider a fair summary.

   Freedom Square

   The central square at the end of Rustaveli Avenue, called Yerevan Square under the tsars and Lenin Square under the Soviets. Soviet troops killed twenty-one demonstrators nearby in April 1989, and the Rose Revolution filled it in November 2003.

   Narikala

   A fortress above the old town whose earliest walls are fourth century, expanded by Arabs, Mongols and Persians in turn. A Russian powder magazine inside it exploded in 1827 and took much of the fortress with it; a funicular and a footpath both reach the ridge.

   Sioni Cathedral

   The cathedral of Tbilisi until the 2000s, founded in the sixth century and rebuilt many times since. It holds the cross of St Nino, the woman who converted Georgia in the fourth century, made — the tradition says — of two vine branches tied with her own hair.

   Museum of Soviet Occupation

   A museum opened in 2006 inside the national museum, documenting the seventy years of Soviet rule and the repression that came with it — the deportations, the executions, and the files. Its politics are pointed, which is the reason it exists.

   Georgian National Museum

   Museum group in Tbilisi founded in 2004, joining several older institutions. Its treasury holds Colchian goldwork from the third millennium BC found in western Georgia.

    Samtavro Monastery

    A monastery at Mtskheta founded in the fourth century on the spot where St Nino is said to have lived in a blackberry bush. King Mirian and Queen Nana, the first Christian rulers of Georgia, are buried in the church, and nuns still occupy the complex.

   Chronicle of Georgia

   A monument on Keeni hill near the Tbilisi Sea, begun by the Georgian sculptor Zurab Tsereteli in 1985 and never finished. Sixteen columns up to thirty metres high carry reliefs of kings and scenes from the life of Christ, reached by a long flight of steps above the city.

   Anchiskhati Basilica

   The oldest surviving church in Tbilisi, a basilica of the sixth century, standing at street level in the old town among houses several centuries younger. Its name comes from an icon brought here from Anchi in the seventeenth century.

   Metekhi church

   A church on the cliff above the river facing the old town, whose present building dates from the 1280s though the site is much older. The equestrian statue beside it is of Vakhtang Gorgasali, the fifth-century king credited with founding the city.

   Armaztsikhe

   The royal city of Iberia, four kilometres from Mtskheta, occupied from the third century BC. Its acropolis, palace and a Roman-style bath house have been excavated on the terraced hillside above the Kura.

   Tbilisi TV Broadcasting Tower

   A tower of 1972 on Mtatsminda ridge, whose height above the city makes it visible from almost everywhere in Tbilisi. It replaced an earlier mast, and its lights are used to mark national occasions and mourning.

   Art Museum of Georgia

   The main art museum, whose treasury holds medieval Georgian goldwork, cloisonné enamel and icons — including the Khakhuli triptych, a twelfth-century gold altarpiece set with over a hundred enamels, some of them Byzantine work of the eighth century.

   Avlabari

   A quarter of old Tbilisi on the left bank of the Mtkvari, recorded as Isani in the chronicles of the eleventh to thirteenth centuries. Armenian churches, the presidential palace and a heavy programme of redevelopment now share the same slopes.

   National Botanical Garden of Georgia

   A hundred and sixty hectares in the gorge below Narikala, cultivated as a garden for over three hundred years and holding some four and a half thousand kinds of plant. A waterfall runs through it, and the walk down from the fortress into it is the best approach.

   Saint George's Church

   A thirteenth-century Armenian church in the old town, one of only two still holding services and the seat of the Armenian Apostolic diocese of Georgia. It stands at the southwestern corner of Vakhtang Gorgasali Square below Narikala fortress.

    Tbilisi Zoo

    Georgia's oldest and largest zoo, opened in 1927 in the valley of the Vere river in central Tbilisi. The flood of 14 June 2015 tore through the grounds, killing many animals and releasing others into the streets, and the zoo has been rebuilding since.
