   National Museum of Montenegro

   The largest museum in Montenegro, established in 1896 at Cetinje, the old royal capital, and spread over five separate collections in the palaces of the Petrović dynasty. King Nikola's palace is kept as it was left in 1916.

   Kotor Cathedral

   A Romanesque cathedral consecrated in 1166 in Kotor, damaged by earthquakes and rebuilt with two mismatched bell towers — the money ran out. Its reliquary chapel holds the relics of Saint Tryphon in silver and gold work made by Kotor goldsmiths over six centuries.

   Fortifications of Kotor

   An integrated fortification system of ramparts, towers, gates and forts running 4.5 kilometres around Kotor and up the mountain behind it to the fortress of San Giovanni at 260 metres. It was built up over a thousand years and is a World Heritage site; 1,350 steps climb it.

   Lovćen National Park

   A limestone massif above Kotor, made a national park in 1952 and covering some 6,200 hectares. The mausoleum of the poet-bishop Petar II Petrovic-Njegos stands on Jezerski vrh at 1,657 metres, reached by 461 steps, with half of Montenegro laid out below.

   Cetinje Monastery

   A Serbian Orthodox monastery at Cetinje, seat of the Metropolitanate of Montenegro and the Littoral, founded in 1484 and destroyed and rebuilt repeatedly under Ottoman attack. It holds what is venerated as the right hand of John the Baptist.

   Jaz Beach

   A beach two and a half kilometres west of Budva, in two stretches under a headland. The field behind it has held some of the largest concerts in the Balkans, the Rolling Stones and Madonna among them.

   Savina monastery

   A Serbian Orthodox monastery on a cypress-covered slope above the bay at Herceg Novi. The small church goes back to the 15th century, while the great church with its Venetian-influenced carving was built between 1777 and 1799; the treasury holds old manuscripts and icons.

   Mausoleum of Njegoš

   A mausoleum at 1,657 metres on Jezerski Vrh on Mount Lovćen, holding Petar II Petrović-Njegoš, the prince-bishop who was also Montenegro's greatest poet. Ivan Meštrović designed it; 461 steps climb to it and the whole country seems visible from the terrace.

   A Serbian Orthodox monastery near Budva founded in the fifteenth century by the Crnojević family, with two churches inside a walled courtyard. Petar II Petrović-Njegoš stayed and wrote here.

    Church of Our Lady of Remedy

    A Catholic church on the slope of Saint John's hill above Kotor, halfway up the steps to the fortress and built in 1518 as a votive offering after plague. It is the point where most climbers stop, and the view over the bay is the reason.

   Fort Gorazda

   An Austro-Hungarian fort on a hill above Kotor Bay, built in the 1880s with an armoured revolving gun turret — an advanced design for its date. It formed part of the line closing the bay and stands abandoned but substantially intact.

   Vrmac Fortress

   An Austro-Hungarian fort on the southern end of the Vrmac ridge between Kotor and Tivat, completed in 1897 and shelled by Montenegrin artillery in 1914. It commands both the inner and outer bay, and a hiking trail passes it.

   Church of Saint Luke in Kotor

   A church of 1195 in Kotor's old town, the only building in the city to come through every earthquake without structural damage. Catholic until 1657, it then held both rites — a Catholic and an Orthodox altar stood in it together for centuries.

   Court Church in Cetinje

   The court church at Ćipur in Cetinje, built in 1886 on the site of the first Cetinje monastery, holding the tombs of King Nikola and Queen Milena, returned from Italy in 1989. It is small and plain by design.

   Aquarium Boka

   The first public aquarium in Montenegro, run by the Institute for Marine Biology of the University of Montenegro at Kotor. It shows Adriatic fish and invertebrates and works on the conservation of the bay's biodiversity.

   The main square of Kotor's old town, entered from the Sea Gate, named for the Venetian arsenal that stood on it. The clock tower of 1602 and the medieval pillar of shame — where offenders were exposed — are both on it.

   Vlah Church

   An Orthodox church of 1450 at Donji Kraj on the Cetinje plain, whose churchyard fence is made from about fifteen hundred rifle barrels taken from the Ottomans in nineteenth-century fighting. It is the oldest surviving building in Cetinje.

   A Serbian Orthodox monastery at Lastva Grbaljska in the Grbalj plain near Budva, whose church is dedicated to the Nativity of the Theotokos. It was a centre of church administration for this district in the medieval period.
