   Lalla Abla Mosque

   A mosque above Tangier's port, finished in 2017 and dedicated by the king in 2018. Its white minaret is the first thing seen from the ferries coming in from Spain.

   HMS Britannia

   A King Edward VII-class battleship built at Portsmouth between 1904 and 1906. A German submarine torpedoed her off Cape Trafalgar on 9 November 1918, two days before the armistice, making her the last British battleship lost in the First World War.

   The Great Mosque of Tangier

   The main Friday mosque of Tangier, in the medina. The present building is early nineteenth century, but the site has carried a temple, a Portuguese cathedral and an English church in turn.

   The Catholic cathedral of Tangier, built in 1961 in a modern idiom with Moroccan arches and tilework, and the seat of an archdiocese that serves a largely African and European congregation.

   Sidi Bou Abid Mosque

   A mosque of 1917 above the Grand Socco, its minaret covered in polychrome tile and visible from most of the lower medina. It is the building that fixes the skyline in every photograph taken from the market square.

   A large mosque in the newer part of Tangier, finished in 1983 and named for the king who led Morocco to independence. It holds the biggest congregation in the city.

   Church of Saint Andrew

   An Anglican church consecrated in 1905 and built in a deliberately Moorish manner, with the Lord's Prayer running round the chancel arch in Arabic. Walter Harris, the Times correspondent who knew every intrigue in Morocco, is buried in the churchyard.

   Dar el Makhzen (Tangier)

   The sultans' palace in the kasbah, built in the seventeenth century around Andalusian courtyards and now the museum of Moroccan arts. Its terrace looks down over the strait to Spain.

   Church of the Immaculate Conception

   A Catholic church built in 1880 for the Spanish community, known as La Purísima. It served the largest foreign congregation in the city during the international years and still holds mass in Spanish.

   A hillside mansion in the Marshan quarter that the American publisher Malcolm Forbes bought and filled with more than a hundred thousand toy soldiers arranged as battles. The state now owns it and uses it for official guests.

   Kasbah Mosque in Tangier

   The Friday mosque of the kasbah, built in the late seventeenth century under Moulay Ismail, with an octagonal minaret rising above the citadel walls. Its call to prayer carries across the whole medina and over to Spain on a still night.

   Abdelhafid Palace

   A palace of the early twentieth century in Tangier, where the sultan Moulay Abdelhafid lived after abdicating in 1912 and signing away Moroccan sovereignty. It later served as a school and cultural centre.
