   Museo Egizio

   Founded in 1824 and the oldest museum devoted to ancient Egypt anywhere, second in size only to Cairo. Its collection came largely from a Piedmontese consul who dug in Egypt in the 1820s, and it includes the completely intact tomb of the architect Kha and his wife Merit.

   Mole Antonelliana

   A hundred and sixty-seven metres of brick and stone begun in 1863 as a synagogue and taken over by the city when the cost ran away — the tallest masonry dome in the world. A glass lift rises through the middle of the void to the top, which is not for everyone.

   Turin Cathedral

   The cathedral of the 1490s, plain beside what was added to it: Guarini's chapel for the Shroud, a black marble cone of interlocking arches finished in 1694. Fire gutted it in 1997 and the restored chapel reopened in 2018; the Shroud itself is shown only every few decades.

   Basilica of Superga

   Juvarra's basilica of 1731 on a hill above Turin, built to fulfil a vow made during the siege of 1706. Many of the Savoy are buried in it, and in May 1949 the aircraft carrying the Torino football team flew into the hillside behind it, killing all thirty-one aboard.

   Royal Palace of Turin

   The Savoy palace at the centre of Turin, plain outside and heavily gilded within, from the years when this family ran a small state with large ambitions. Its armoury holds one of the best collections of arms in Europe, and the whole ensemble is World Heritage.

   Palazzo Carignano

   Guarini's palace of 1679, whose brick facade curves in and out — an idea nobody else in Italy was using. Victor Emmanuel II was born in it, and the first parliament of united Italy sat in a hall built in its courtyard in 1861.

   Palazzo Madama and Casaforte degli Acaja, Turin

   One building containing a Roman city gate, a medieval castle and Juvarra's baroque facade of 1721, added on the front for a queen. It was the first Senate of the kingdom of Italy and now holds the civic museum of ancient art.

   Palace of Venaria

   A hunting palace begun in 1675 on a scale to rival Versailles, then used as a barracks for two centuries and left a ruin. Its restoration, finished in 2007, was the largest such project in Europe, and the Great Gallery is the finest baroque room in Italy for scale.

   Galleria Sabauda

   The Savoy picture collection, built up over three centuries and now shown in the wing beside the royal palace. Van Eyck's Stigmata of St Francis, Memling, Mantegna and a strong group of Piedmontese and Dutch painting are in it.

    Castello del Valentino

    A seventeenth-century Savoy residence in the Valentino park with a French-style courtyard and steep roofs, now the architecture faculty of the polytechnic. Students walk through rooms with painted ceilings on the way to lectures.

   The national film museum, arranged up the inside of the Mole Antonelliana on a spiral ramp, with red velvet loungers in the central void where visitors lie back and watch clips projected overhead. Its collection began with one historian's private hoard.

   Basilica of Our Lady Help of Christians

   The church Don Bosco built beside the workshops where he taught poor boys trades, consecrated in 1868 and raised to basilica rank in 1911. His body lies in a glass case in the right transept, and the Salesian order he founded now works in over a hundred countries.

   The north gate of Roman Augusta Taurinorum, built in the first century BC with two sixteen-sided towers and four openings, and among the best-preserved Roman gates anywhere. The grid of streets behind it is still the grid the Romans laid out.

   The automobile museum of Turin, founded by Carlo Biscaretti di Ruffia. Nearly two hundred cars from eighty makes across eight countries — Italy, France, Britain, Germany and others — are displayed in a three-storey building of 1960.

   Castle of Rivoli

   A Savoy palace at Rivoli that Juvarra never finished — the building stops abruptly where the money did. Since 1984 it has held the contemporary art museum, and the contrast of the unfinished baroque shell with the work in it is deliberate.

   A museum of the Italian Risorgimento in the Palazzo Carignano in Turin. It is the oldest and largest of the twenty-three Italian museums on the subject, and under a law of 1901 the only one permitted to call itself national.

   The central square, laid out in the 1580s and closed by Palazzo Madama on one side and the royal palace on another. Turin's arcades run off it in every direction, which is why the city can be crossed in the rain without getting wet.

   Church of San Lorenzo, Turin

   Guarini's royal chapel beside the palace, finished in 1687, whose dome is a cage of eight intersecting ribs open to the light between them — mathematics as architecture. From outside it barely reads as a church at all, having no facade of its own.

    A neoclassical church on the west bank of the Po in Turin, facing the Vittorio Emanuele I bridge that leads to Piazza Vittorio Veneto. It is dedicated to Mary, Mother of God.
