   Chan Chan

   The capital of the Chimor kingdom and the largest adobe city in the Americas — some twenty square kilometres of walled compounds, each built by a successive king and sealed as his tomb. Rain is now its chief threat, and much of it is under protective cover.

   Huaca de la Luna

   An adobe temple raised by the Moche of northern Peru, five kilometres from the Pacific and four from Trujillo. It was in use from the first to the ninth century and forms the Moche archaeological complex together with the Huaca del Sol.

   Huaca del Sol

   An adobe pyramid raised by the Moche between AD 100 and 800, at the foot of Cerro Blanco in the Moche valley outside Trujillo. The Huaca de la Luna in the same complex is smaller but better preserved.

   Trujillo Cathedral

   The principal church and cathedral of Trujillo, on the Plaza de Armas. It was built over nineteen years, from 1647 to 1666.

   Huanchaco

   A seaside town in the Trujillo region known for its surf, for the reed craft called caballitos de totora that fishermen still ride through the break, and for its ceviche. Chan Chan lies close by, and it was designated a World Surfing Reserve in 2012.

   Huaca del Dragón

   A site near Chan Chan outside Trujillo in Peru, also called the Huaca del Arco Iris, the rainbow temple. It is a large adobe religious, administrative and ceremonial building, decorated with relief friezes of human figures and rainbows.

   Monumental Zone of Trujillo

   The historic centre of Trujillo in northern Peru. The Avenida España, laid out on the line of the old walls, rings it; it was declared a monumental city on 23 April 1971 and a monumental zone on 28 December 1972.
