   Neptune's Grotto

   A stalactite cave at the foot of the Capo Caccia cliffs, with a salt lake inside it. You reach it either by boat from Alghero or by the Escala del Cabirol, six hundred and fifty-four steps cut into the cliff face, which is closed in rough weather.

   Alghero Cathedral

   The cathedral of St Mary the Immaculate in the old town, seat of the bishops of Alghero from 1503 and of Alghero-Bosa since 1986. Begun in Catalan Gothic and finished to a Renaissance design, it rises over a city that still speaks Catalan.

   Necropolis of Anghelu Ruju

   A pre-nuraghic site north of Alghero in Sardinia, the largest necropolis of that period on the island. It was found by chance in 1903 when ground was being dug for a farm building in the Sella e Mosca vineyards.

   nuraghe Palmavera

   An archaeological site at Alghero in Sardinia. It is a complex nuraghe of several linked towers built in stages through the Bronze and Iron Ages, with the remains of a village around it.

   Necropolis of Santu Pedru

   An archaeological site on the road from Alghero to Uri in Sardinia. It consists of ten rock-cut tombs of the type called domus de janas, used in succession by several cultures for a thousand years from the third millennium BC.

    Nostra Signora di Valverde (Alghero)

    A sanctuary seven kilometres from Alghero at the foot of a rock face, its 16th-century church a single nave with three chapels along each side. Alghero people still walk out to it for the pilgrimage on the first Sunday after Easter.
