   Asahiyama Zoo

   Japan's northernmost zoo, opened in 1967 and nearly closed in the 1990s. It survived by rebuilding around how animals behave rather than how they look: a glass tunnel through the penguin pool, a polar bear seen from below, and a penguin walk through the snow each winter.

   Yasushi Inoue Memorial Hall

   A museum opened in Asahikawa in 1993 for the novelist Yasushi Inoue, born in the city in 1907. About five hundred of its thousand items are shown, and his study and drawing room were moved here from Tokyo in 2012.

   Asahikawa Museum of Sculpture

   A sculpture museum at Asahikawa in Hokkaido. Its building served from 1902 to 1945 as the Kaikōsha, the officers' club of the Japanese army's Seventh Division, and passed through use as a local history museum in 1968 before becoming what it is.

   Kamikawa Shrine

   A shrine founded in 1883 as settlers opened the Kamikawa basin, and moved in 1924 to the wooded hill above Asahikawa where it stands now. Amaterasu, Okuninushi and a dozen other kami are enshrined here, and the annual festival falls on 21 July.

   Hokuchin Memorial Museum

   A military history museum beside the garrison at Asahikawa, showing some 2,500 items on the Tondenhei farmer-soldiers who opened Hokkaido, the Imperial Army's 7th Division and the Self-Defence Force units that followed. Admission is free.

   Shikisai-no-oka

   Some fifteen hectares of flower fields laid in stripes across the hills at Biei, planted so that something is always in bloom from May to October: poppies, lupins and salvia, then sunflowers and cosmos. Tractor buses run the rows, with the Daisetsuzan range behind.

   Miura Ayako Literature Museum

   A literary museum in Asahikawa, Hokkaido. It opened in 1998 in the house where the writer Ayako Miura lived, and is dedicated to her.

   Ueno Farm

   A 13.3-hectare garden about thirty kilometres from the centre of Asahikawa, Hokkaido. Nature lovers come from all over Japan to see it, and it is known as "Hokkaido's English garden".

   Takushinkan

   A photographic gallery that Shinzo Maeda opened on 10 July 1987 in a closed primary school at Biei, hung with his own images of the surrounding hills. Some three hectares of grounds around it hold a birch avenue and a path of lavender.
