   Aomori Museum of Art

   The prefectural art museum, opened in 2006 beside the Sannai-Maruyama excavation and built like a trench dug into the same white earth. It holds four ballet backdrops by Chagall and Nara Yoshitomo's enormous Aomori dog.

   Seiryū-ji Temple

   A Koyasan Shingon temple founded in 1982, whose Showa Great Buddha of 1984 is a seated bronze Dainichi twenty-one metres high — the tallest bronze Buddha in Japan, taller than the one at Kamakura. A five-storey pagoda stands in the same grounds.

   Gappo Park

   Aomori's oldest park, laid out in 1894 on the bay by a local man who planted the pines himself. It has a beach, a long pine avenue and the city's cherry blossom, and it is a fifteen-minute walk east of the station.

   Nebuta Museum Wa Rasse displays the actual festival floats all year round. Timing a visit to the haneto dance sessions gives something of the feeling of the festival itself.

   Komakino Site

   A Jomon stone circle of about four thousand years ago — three concentric rings up to fifty-five metres across, set on a hillside that was levelled by hand first. It is part of the Jomon sites listed by UNESCO in 2021.

    Aomori City Forestry Museum

    A forestry museum in the wooden Renaissance-style building of 1908 that served as the national forest service's Aomori office. The subject is the Hiba cypress trade that this coast lived on, and the building is as much of the exhibit as the tools.

   Namioka Castle

   A Muromachi-period castle of the Namioka Kitabatake, a branch of the family that had backed the southern court. It was taken in 1578 and never rebuilt; the earth ramparts and moats survive on the flat ground and are a national historic site.
