Amami Ōshima lies between Kyushu and Okinawa and became a natural World Heritage site in 2021, listed for a subtropical laurel forest that shelters the Amami rabbit and little else like it.

The mangrove estuary at Sumiyo is paddled by canoe at high tide. The island distils shochu from brown sugar, a licence granted nowhere else in Japan, and weaves Oshima tsumugi silk. The reefs stay uncrowded.

    Amami Guntō National Park

    A national park declared in 2017 across the Amami islands, protecting subtropical laurel forest, mangrove and coral. The forest holds the Amami rabbit, a species with no close relatives anywhere; the wider area became a natural World Heritage site in 2021.
