   Palacio de López

   A neoclassical palace begun in the 1860s for Francisco Solano López and finished after the war that killed him and most of Paraguay's adult men. It is the seat of government, floodlit at night, and the square in front is where the country demonstrates.

   The principal Catholic church of Paraguay, in the La Catedral district of the historic centre of Asunción. It was the first diocese established in the Río de la Plata.

   National Pantheon of the Heroes

   A national monument of Paraguay between Calle Palma and Calle Chile in central Asunción. It began in October 1863 when President Francisco Solano López ordered a chapel of the Assumption; the Italian architect Alejandro Ravizza designed it.

   St. Lawrence Cathedral, San Lorenzo

   A church begun early in the 20th century and some fifty years in the building, filling a block of the town centre with squares on every side. John Paul II created the diocese of San Lorenzo in 2000, raising it to cathedral; its style has no match in Paraguay.

   Museum of the Conmebol

   The football museum of the South American confederation, at its headquarters in Luque outside Asuncion. Shirts, boots and the trophies of the Copa America and the Copa Libertadores fill it, along with a hall given to the ten member nations.

   Botanical Garden and Zoo of Asunción

   A botanical garden and zoo in Asunción. The city took over the former estate of the López presidential family to make it, and their house now holds the natural history museum.

    Las Lomas

    A barrio of 1.47 square kilometres in the northeast of Asuncion, better known as Carmelitas after the convent of Discalced Carmelites within it. The Central Bank of Paraguay stands here too, among embassies and quiet residential streets.

   Catedral

   The riverside barrio where the city began, named for its cathedral, which was last rebuilt in 1850 under Carlos Antonio Lopez. Some 3,676 people live among its landmarks: the old Cabildo, now a museum, the Plaza de la Independencia and the Panteon Nacional de los Heroes.

   Virgen del Huerto

   A barrio of 0.78 square kilometres in the northeast of Asuncion, in the San Roque district, with 3,857 residents at the 2022 census. Avenida Venezuela closes it on the east, and its streets are largely residential.

   A barrio of about 1.5 square kilometres in the southeast of Asuncion, its Guarani name meaning spring of clear water. The World Trade Center towers and the Paseo La Galeria shopping centre stand within it.

   A small barrio of 0.83 square kilometres in Asuncion, named for Jose Eduvigis Diaz, the Paraguayan general who commanded at Curupayty in 1866 during the war of the Triple Alliance.

   San Jorge
