   Hollywood Walk of Fame

   More than 2,800 brass and terrazzo stars set into the pavement along fifteen blocks of Hollywood Boulevard and three of Vine Street, begun in 1958. A star costs the nominee's sponsor about $85,000 today; the handprints in the forecourt of the Chinese Theatre are the other half of the walk.

   Hollywood Sign

   Nine white letters 13.7 metres high on Mount Lee, put up in 1923 to advertise a housing development called Hollywoodland and cut down to the present name in 1949. Griffith Observatory is where to photograph it with the city and the ocean behind.

   U.S. Bank Tower

   A 310-metre tower of 1989 by Henry Cobb, the tallest building in the western United States until 2016, with a crown of glass fins. A glass slide runs down the outside of the seventieth floor, added in 2016, and the building is known locally as the Library Tower.

   La Brea Tar Pits

   Asphalt seeps that have trapped animals for fifty thousand years, in a park on Wilshire Boulevard where the tar still bubbles up through lawns. Over three million specimens have come out of it, including 2,000 dire wolves and one human — a woman found in 1914.

   Los Angeles County Museum of Art

   The largest art museum in the western United States, holding about 150,000 works from antiquity to the present on Museum Row. Chris Burden's Urban Light, 202 restored cast-iron street lamps at the entrance, has become the museum's signature and is free to stand among.

   Century City

   A 71-hectare business district on what was the back lot of Twentieth Century Fox, sold in 1961 to pay for Cleopatra. Its towers stand on the ground where Hello, Dolly! was filmed, and the Nakatomi Plaza of Die Hard is Fox's own headquarters here.

   Aon Center

   A 262-metre black modernist slab of 1973 at 707 Wilshire, the second tallest building in the city and the tallest in the world with a single-tenant name for a decade. A 1988 fire on the twelfth floor burned for three and a half hours and rewrote California's sprinkler laws.

   Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles

   A contemporary art museum founded in 1979, whose Grand Avenue building of 1986 was Arata Isozaki's first work in America — red Indian sandstone with a pyramid skylight. The Geffen Contemporary, a warehouse converted by Frank Gehry, holds the larger installations.

   Norton Simon Museum

   A museum in Pasadena holding the collection Norton Simon assembled from the 1950s, seven centuries of European painting bought largely at auction. Raphael, Rembrandt, Goya and one of the fullest Degas holdings anywhere are in it, along with South Asian sculpture downstairs.

    The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens

    The estate of the railway magnate Henry Huntington in San Marino, holding a library with a Gutenberg Bible and Chaucer manuscripts, Gainsborough's Blue Boy, and 51 hectares of garden. The Japanese and desert gardens alone take an afternoon.

   Universal Studios Hollywood

   A theme park on a working studio lot, opened to tours in 1964, where the tram ride through the back lot is the part that exists nowhere else. Its Wizarding World opened in 2016 and Super Nintendo World in 2023, on a hillside site split over two levels.

   South Los Angeles

   The region south of downtown, historically the centre of Black Los Angeles after the Great Migration, and the ground of both the 1965 Watts and 1992 uprisings. The Watts Towers, built single-handed by Simon Rodia over thirty-three years, stand in it.

   Hillside Memorial Park

   A Jewish cemetery in Culver City where much of the entertainment industry is buried, marked by Al Jolson's domed marble memorial and its waterfall. It lies under the approach path to the airport, so the hillside is the first thing many arrivals see.

   MacArthur Park

   A park in Westlake dating from the 1880s, renamed for General Douglas MacArthur in 1942, with a lake fed by natural springs. Its bandshell and the surrounding blocks are the centre of the city's Central American communities.

   Griffith Park

   A 1,740-hectare park at the east end of the Santa Monica Mountains, one of the largest urban parks in North America, given to the city in 1896 by a mining millionaire later jailed for shooting his wife. The observatory is free, and the lawn at dusk is the best view of the city.

   Echo Park

   A neighbourhood northwest of downtown between Silver Lake and Chinatown, built around a reservoir of the 1860s and now the centre of the city's independent music and design scene. The lotus flowers on the lake bloom in July and have their own festival.

   District of south Los Angeles, the centre of the African American community since the 1940s. Its main avenue was at the heart of the unrest of 1965 and again in 1992.

   Little Tokyo

   The historic Japanese American district downtown, and the heart of the largest such community in North America, settled from 1885 and emptied by internment in 1942. The Japanese American National Museum tells that; First Street's original storefronts survive as a National Historic Landmark.

   Hollyhock House

   Frank Lloyd Wright's first Los Angeles house, built between 1919 and 1921 for the oil heiress Aline Barnsdall, with a stylised hollyhock motif in cast concrete throughout. Three wings enclose a courtyard; it became the city's first World Heritage site in 2019.

    Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels

    The Catholic cathedral of Los Angeles, opened in 2002 to a design by Rafael Moneo, with no right angles in the plan and alabaster panels instead of stained glass. It replaced a church damaged in the 1994 earthquake and stands at the top of the downtown cultural axis.
