   Arikok National Park

   Thirty-two square kilometres, nearly a fifth of Aruba, of lava, limestone and cactus on the windward side. Arawak paintings survive in its caves, and the Conchi natural pool, a rock basin the surf fills, is reached only on foot, by horse or in a four-wheel drive.

   Alto Vista Chapel

   A small Catholic chapel on a hill northeast of Noord on Aruba, looking out over the northern sea. It is painted bright yellow and stands out for miles; the present building was completed in 1952 on the site of a chapel founded in 1750 by the Venezuelan missionary Domingo Silvestre.

   Fort Zoutman

   The oldest building on Aruba, built in 1798 by enslaved labourers and named for a Dutch admiral. The Willem III tower was added in 1868, and UNESCO lists the fort among the memory sites of the Caribbean slave route.

   MS Antilla

   A German freighter scuttled by her own crew in May 1940 when the Netherlands fell and Dutch Aruba interned them. A hundred and twenty metres of her lie on her side in shallow water off Malmok with part of the hull above the surface — the largest wreck in the Caribbean and easy snorkelling.

   Eagle Beach

   A wide public beach at Oranjestad, where a local rule keeps the hotels low. The two divi-divi trees bent flat by the trade wind stand on it and are the most photographed thing on the island.
