The Appian Way ended at Brindisi, and the Roman column at the top of the harbour steps marked the finish; ships have left from here for Greece and the east ever since.

It works best as a door into the Salento — baroque Lecce forty minutes away, the white town of Ostuni, the cliff-divers at Polignano a Mare, and burrata from the country in between.

Brindisi cathedral
The cathedral of Brindisi, first consecrated in 1143 and rebuilt after the earthquake of 1743 brought most of it down. Fragments of the mosaic floor of 1178 survive in the nave, and Frederick II married Yolande of Jerusalem here in 1225 before sailing on crusade.

Monument to the Sailor of Italy
A monument of 1933 in the shape of a ship's rudder, rising 53 metres above the harbour to the Italian sailors lost at sea. A crypt at its foot carries their names, and the anchor chain of a warship rings the base.

Castello Svevo
The land castle Frederick II built in 1227 to hold the harbour, its trapezoid walls raised with stone taken from the Roman town. Aragonese and Spanish rulers thickened them, and the navy held the place until recent years.

Castello alfonsino
A fort on the island of Sant'Andrea at the mouth of the harbour, begun in 1481 for Alfonso of Aragon after the Ottoman raid on Otranto. A causeway joins it to the older Torre del Cavallo, and from the sea the two close the entrance to the port.

Cave church Saint Blaise
A church cut into the tufa outside San Vito dei Normanni, its walls painted in 1196 by a monk named Daniel with saints and scenes from the gospels. The Byzantine manner of the frescoes marks the Greek monastic tradition that long survived in Apulia.

A Norman castle founded about 1062 by Robert Guiscard, wrecked by earthquake in the 15th century and rebuilt by the families who held the town after. It now holds the archaeological museum, with Messapian tomb goods dug from the surrounding fields.

Area Archeologica di San Pietro degli Schiavoni
A block of the Roman town — houses, mosaics and a paved street — uncovered in the 1960s when the theatre above was rebuilt. The Teatro Verdi now stands on pillars over the excavation, which lies open beneath the stalls.

San Giovanni al Sepolcro
A round Norman church of the 11th century, raised by the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre on the model of the church in Jerusalem. A carved portal with lions guards the door, and faded frescoes of the 13th century line the drum inside.

Santa Maria del Casale
A church of about 1300 built for Philip of Anjou, its front laid in bands of pale and dark stone. A great Last Judgment covers the inner west wall, and the trial of the Templars of Apulia was held within these walls in 1310.

The column marking where the Appian Way met the sea after some 540 kilometres from Rome, standing above the steps at the head of the harbour. A second stood beside it until 1666, when it was given to Lecce and set up there under a statue of St Oronzo.
