   Nidhe Israel Synagogue

   Founded in 1654 by Sephardim who came from Brazil when the Portuguese retook Recife, and among the oldest Jewish congregations in the Americas. The present building dates from 1833; a mikveh fed by a spring was excavated beside it in 2008.

   Harrison's Cave

   A limestone cave in Barbados. It first appears in the record in 1795, and it is now toured on a tram that runs down through the chambers.

   Andromeda Botanic Gardens

   An organic botanic garden of eight acres at Bathsheba in St Joseph in Barbados. The horticulturist Iris Bannochie made it from the 1950s as her private collection and garden.

   Barbados Museum & Historical Society

   A museum founded in 1933 in the old military prison of the Garrison at St Ann's, holding more than 500,000 objects — antique maps, paintings, natural history and the record of plantation life. In 1993 it took on the Newton slave burial ground in Christ Church.

   Bussa Emancipation Statue

   A sculpture at the Haggatt Hall roundabout east of Bridgetown in Barbados. It shows the moment of emancipation as the breaking of chains, and is known locally as Bussa, after the slave who led the rebellion of 1816.

   Jama Mosque

   One of the two principal mosques of Barbados, standing in Bridgetown and serving a community whose families came largely as traders from Gujarat and Sindh. Friday prayers draw worshippers from across the island to its hall.

   National Heroes Square

   A square in the middle of Bridgetown in Barbados. It was formerly called Trafalgar Square and lies along Upper Broad Street on the north bank of the Careenage.

   A sand beach near Oistins on the south coast of Barbados. The water is calm and the sunsets fine, and Enterprise Beach, popular with families, runs north from it.

    Heywoods Beach

    A long stretch of west-coast sand in St Peter, north of Speightstown, backed by casuarinas and by a resort built in the 1980s. The water lies calm enough for children, and turtles come ashore to nest in season.
