   Accademia Carrara

   A gallery founded in 1796 on the bequest of Count Giacomo Carrara, holding some 1,800 paintings including Botticelli, Raphael, Bellini and Lorenzo Lotto. It reopened in 2023 after long restoration, and the fine arts academy still shares the building.

   San Bartolomeo Church

   The parish church of Marne, a village in the Brembo valley below Bergamo, independent until Marne was joined to Filago as a comune. It is dedicated to Bartholomew the Apostle and keeps the rhythm of the village year.

   Santa Maria Maggiore

   A Romanesque basilica begun in 1137 in Bergamo's upper town, entered only from the side because it has no main door. Its choir stalls were inlaid to designs by Lorenzo Lotto, and Donizetti is buried inside.

   Bergamo Cathedral

   The cathedral of Bergamo, dedicated to the city's patron Alexander, a Roman soldier said to have been beheaded here in 303. Filarete drew the plans in 1459 and the neoclassical facade was finished only in 1886; excavations under it reached the Roman street.

   Cappella Colleoni

   A funerary chapel of 1476 that the mercenary captain Bartolomeo Colleoni had built for himself in coloured marble, after demolishing a sacristy of the basilica to make room. Giovanni Antonio Amadeo designed it; Colleoni's gilded equestrian figure sits on the sarcophagus.

   Redona

   A quarter on the east side of Bergamo, an independent comune until it was annexed in 1927. The lanes around its parish church are what is left of the village, now enclosed by twentieth-century housing.

   Palazzo della Ragione

   The oldest communal palace in Lombardy, raised in the 12th century on the Piazza Vecchia of the upper town and rebuilt after fire in the 1530s. An open arcade runs beneath it, and a covered stair climbs from the square to the hall above.

   Basilica di Santa Giulia

   A Romanesque church at Bonate Sotto, begun in the early twelfth century on the site of a Lombard-era monastery and never finished. Only the apse and part of the nave stand, alone in a field outside the town, with carved capitals still in place.

   Suardi Chapel

   A private oratory in the Suardi villa at Trescore Balneario, whose walls and vault Lorenzo Lotto covered in 1524 with the lives of Saints Barbara and Brigid. Christ's hands appear as vine stems that branch across the ceiling and end in medallions of the saints.

    Astino Monastery

    A Vallombrosan abbey founded in 1107 in a valley west of Bergamo, closed in 1797 and used as a farm and then an asylum. It was restored in the 2010s and is now used for exhibitions and as an agro-ecology research station, with its original church intact.

   A fifteenth-century castle at Cavernago where Bartolomeo Colleoni spent his last years and died in 1475, converted from fortress to residence with moats and drawbridge kept. Frescoes inside show the visit of the king of Denmark in 1474.

   Le Cornelle

   A zoo at Valbrembo on the Brembo river, opened in 1981 on ten hectares of riverside woodland, and one of the larger collections in Lombardy. Around a thousand animals of a hundred and twenty species are kept, with the river forest left standing between the enclosures.

   Castle of Trezzo sull'Adda

   A Visconti castle built between 1370 and 1377 above a bend of the Adda, with a tower forty-two metres high and a bridge that crossed the river in a single span of seventy-two metres — the widest arch in Europe at the time. Its lord Bernabò was poisoned by his nephew and Venice pulled the castle down in 1416.

   A Romanesque church in Bergamo's upper town, on Via Porta Dipinta, whose walls carry frescoes from the eleventh to the sixteenth century in overlapping layers. Lorenzo Lotto painted the chapel to the left of the entrance in 1525.

   Parco dei Colli di Bergamo

   A regional park of 4,700 hectares over the hills that surround upper Bergamo, established in 1977. Trails begin immediately outside the Venetian walls and climb past monasteries, terraced farms and the Astino valley to the ridge.

   A baroque church at Largo Belotti, taken over from the Dominicans, holding Lorenzo Lotto's Martinengo altarpiece of 1516 — his first major work in Bergamo, a Virgin enthroned among eight saints. The choir stalls are inlaid to designs by Lotto as well.

   A round Romanesque church of the twelfth century at Almenno San Bartolomeo, cylindrical inside and out on two storeys with a gallery. The form is rare in Lombardy, which makes it the standard example of the region's medieval architecture.

   Bergamo Botanical Garden "Lorenzo Rota"

   A botanical garden of 1,357 square metres in upper Bergamo, reached by a stairway from Colle Aperto, planted in terraces so that Alpine species sit at their own altitudes. It is named after the nineteenth-century Bergamo botanist Lorenzo Rota and is free.

   Tempietto di Santa Croce

   A small octagonal chapel of the eleventh century beside Santa Maria Maggiore in upper Bergamo, built as a baptistery or a burial chapel on a Greek-cross plan under a low dome. It is one of the purest pieces of Lombard Romanesque in the city.

    Enrico Caffi Museum of Natural Science

    The civic natural science museum in upper Bergamo, holding fossils and minerals from the southern Alpine foothills. Its best-known specimens are Triassic reptiles from the Zorzino limestone nearby, including a nearly complete flying reptile.
