   Kololi

   The main resort strip of the Gambia, on the Atlantic near Serrekunda, with hotels along the sand and the Bijilo forest behind it. Red colobus and green monkeys come down through that forest to the hotel gardens.

   Niumi National Park

   A national park of some fifty square kilometres on the north bank, running from mangrove creeks to sandbar and lagoon, and continuous with Senegal's Saloum delta across the border. Jinack Island within it has a beach almost nobody reaches.

   Pipeline Mosque

   The main mosque of Serekunda, opened in 1990 on the Pipeline road, its minarets rising over the largest town in the Gambia. Friday prayers fill the courtyard and spill out into the street.

   Arch 22

   A triumphal arch built in 1996 on the road into Banjul, marking the coup of 22 July 1994 that brought Yahya Jammeh to power. It stands thirty-five metres high and holds a small museum and a viewing gallery.

   Kachikally Museum and Crocodile Pool

   A sacred crocodile pool at Bakau, sixteen kilometres from Banjul, one of three in the country used for fertility rites. Around a hundred Nile crocodiles live in it, habituated enough that the keepers let visitors touch them, which they do at their own discretion.

   Our Lady of the Assumption Cathedral, Banjul

   The Catholic cathedral of Banjul, on Hagan Street, and the larger of the city's two cathedrals. It serves a Christian minority in a country that is overwhelmingly Muslim and unusually easy about the difference.

   Fajara

   A coastal suburb of Bakau where the diplomatic and expatriate quarter sits behind the beach. The Medical Research Council's Gambian unit, at work here since 1947, fills a fenced compound on Atlantic Boulevard, and a golf course runs down towards the cliffs.

   King Fahad Mosque in Banjul

   The largest mosque in Banjul, Gambia. It stands on Box Bar Road near Arch 22 and was built with Saudi funding, being dedicated in February 1988.
